Mudec. The "Year of Peru" program was presented on Monday 20th, exhibitions and many initiatives to discover the thousand-year-old Andean cultures

From 8 October the great exhibition "Macchu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru", on display three thousand years of civilization from its origins to the Incas

Milan, June 20 2022 - A 'golden' year is about to be inaugurated at Mudec, one that will tell the public about 'archaeological' Peru, that of the millenary civilizations - including the refined Moche civilization - which culminated with the great Inca Empire; but also contemporary Peru, that of the Andean cultures and that which, together with the Peruvian communities of Milan, can be known up close through a program of events and in-depth activities unprecedented for the city of Milan.

Mudec therefore renews the strong bond with Andean cultures, in a project aimed at describing them in 360 degrees, from the richness of the artistic and cultural heritage to the great contemporary excellences of "living" culture and traditions (dance, music, poetry , festivals and rituals), without forgetting the great past and contemporary textile tradition.

From June 2022 until the first months of 2023, the public will be accompanied on a kaleidoscopic cultural journey that will occupy all the spaces of the Museum, with many events and different content formats: from conferences and evening lectures with aperitif to workshops and laboratories, from round tables to guided tours, from artistic performances to conferences.

We start on Thursday 23 June at 18.30 pm with the first meeting to explore Peru and the civilizations that have inhabited it: "Chan Chan: the sacred city". Francesca Colosi, Director of the Italian Mission in Peru and researcher of the Institute of Cultural Heritage Sciences (ISPC) will lead the public in the exploration of the largest city in the world built with mud bricks, the ancient capital of the great kingdom of the Chimors (IX -XV AD), fragile and unique jewel declared a World Heritage Site since 1986.

On September 24th it will be the turn of the Peruvian dance workshop, known as “L'Huayno”, in the company of the young Italian-Peruvian artist Davide Avila. Defined by the Latin American press in Milan as "the new discovery", he was awarded "Recognition of Peruvian pride" and "Cultural Ambassador" by Municipality 4 of the Municipality of Milan.

The richness of the cultural offering of the program is the result of the work of presence in the city area and of constant dialogue with the voices coming from the international communities, which Milano Città Mondo carries out every day within the Mudec.

All meetings will be free, subject to availability or by reservation; it is therefore advisable to always follow the "The Year of Peru" calendar on the Mudec website www.mudec.it, to stay updated in real time on scheduled appointments.

THE ANTHROPOLOGICAL FOCUS EXHIBITION “AN INTIMATE LOOK”

The Italian-Peruvian community of Milan talks about itself through the images of Candy Carmona Vera.

Also from 8 October to 19 February, a photographic exhibition displayed in the windows of the large lobed atrium of the Mudec tells the story of the Andean community of Milan through the works of the Italian-Peruvian photographer Candy Carmona Vera. The lives of people, families, traditions come to life in a dynamic montage of images that give us a cross-section of the multicultural city, between intimate perspectives and large choral frescoes.

THE CONFERENCE ON PRE-COLOMBIAN AND AMERICAN TEXTILES

It is the most important academic-scientific event for scholars of Andean cultures, which is held every three years. Mudec has been elected headquarters for 2022 by a prestigious board of scholars. The conference will take place over four days of work, from 19 to 22 October.

The International Days on Pre-Columbian and Amerindian textiles (9th edition) will see the participation of over 50 experts from international museums and universities, who will meet in live streaming and in presence at the Mudec Auditorium to discuss and debate on five main topics: new archaeological finds, techniques and dyes, conservation, museum collections, the ethnographic fabric in the Americas.

The academic discussion will be accompanied by presentations of books and documentaries, an advanced Andean weaving workshop and two masterly conferences: one by the Peruvian archaeologist Arabel Fernandez on Moche textiles, and another by the Mexican ethnographer Claudia Rocha on the very current topic of protection of memory and textile heritage in Mexico.

SPECIAL EVENTS

To complement the schedule, special events will also be organised, aimed at everyone, such as the Concert of the Hispano-American Choir of Milan, the puppet show "Peru through the threads", organized by the Carlo Colla & Figli company, the Pisco Night: Aperitif with the emblematic drink of Peru, accompanied by a visit to the "The Golds of Peru" exhibition, as well as the Peruvian Brunch also with a visit to the exhibition, organized every Saturday and Sunday during the opening period of the exhibition.

THE GRAPHIC PROJECT

A call to action dedicated to the students of a Milanese design school who will engage in a project focused on the reworking of ancient Peruvian patterns from which to create new codes, in a continuous connection between past and present.

The project work will be launched in early October, coinciding with the start of lessons, and will last 2 weeks. The most interesting graphic projects will therefore be transformed into a work of art, into an object, into an element of communication.
