Monumental. The "Open-air Museum" exhibition returns

From 10am to 17pm a schedule of events including shows and guided tours. Free entry with reservations required

Milan, June 21 2021 – On Sunday 27 June the Monumental Cemetery of Milan returns to being the precious stage of the "Open-air Museum" exhibition and hosts for the whole day, from 10am to 17pm, a rich schedule of free events with theatre, music, cinema, walks and guided tours.

The day is promoted by the Municipality of Milan and organized in collaboration with Fondazione Milano, present with graduates and students from the Claudio Abbado Civic School of Music, the Luchino Visconti Civic School of Cinema and the Paolo Grassi Civic School of Theatre. The whole day will be punctuated by numerous guided tours to satisfy the curiosity of visitors who are approaching the Monumental Cemetery for the first time or who want to discover more about its artistic beauties and its heritage of historical memories.

The meeting point for all the routes is at the gazebo in the central square of the Cemetery.
With the "Thematic walks in the company of protagonists of today's Milan" the public will be guided by contemporary Milanese characters to discover the past: at 10 the writer Andrea Kerbaker, starting from the Monumental tour which concludes his recent "Milan in 40 walks", will accompany the public through the avenues of the cemetery, focusing on the Urns of the forts, but also on the tombs of unknown people who attracted him out of pure curiosity; at 10 the journalist and theater critic Claudia Cannella will talk about an important stage of Italian theater through the figures of Luigi Bellotti Bon and Paolo Grassi.

The volunteers of the Civil Service will lead, in the morning and afternoon, various thematic routes to discover the Monumental: at 10am and 15pm Alba Chiara Usai will lead the route "The language of the Monumental"; at 10am and 20pm Sanjida Tonni will take visitors to discover "Liberty - a European style in Milan"; at 15am and 40pm the "Adolfo Wildt - the soul and the form" route will start, curated by Mirko Agliardi; at 11am and at 16pm it will be the turn of "Great publishers - another Milan to browse" by Cristian Andres Zoia. At 20pm, 11pm and 20pm it will be possible to follow the Restoration School of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in the walk through the "Brera per Milano" restoration site entitled "Restoration teaching experiences on stone and mosaic artefacts" .

You will enter from the courtyard on the west side of the Cemetery to take part in the theater program, the musical program and the projections. Throughout the day, from 10am to 17pm, the documentary "Quadri dalla quarantine" will be screened in the conference room, created by the students of the Luchino Visconti Civic Film School, directed by Filippo Romanengo, which tells the experience of the lockdown through the eyes of four young students, giving shape to characters and relationships that move against the background "of what we have all experienced". Followed by a selection of animated and filming short films created thanks to an educational and creative experimentation project carried out during the confinement. Works by Martina Zerpelloni, Chiara Pagliarin, Thea Ambrosini and Letizia Pallone.

At 11 a short theatrical film will be staged, written ad hoc and performed by graduates of the Paolo Grassi Civic Theater School. The protagonist of the short play is a famous character buried in the Cemetery who, through the ritual of the theatre, meets contemporary citizens: Walter Chiari. The famous comic actor, called from beyond the grave especially for the occasion, collects a lifetime achievement award in the first and only edition of the Sarchiapone d'oro. An ironic and non-existent prize just like the animal invented in his most famous gag. The actor, who has already lived between heaven and hell in his life, will not miss the chance to get lost again, as only he can do, in the meanders of thanks full of stories and funny anecdotes, to the point of revealing to us the secret of the birth of laughter, understood only between life and death. Il Sarchiapone d'oro - the eternal laughter of Walter Chiari, is written by Luca Rodella, performed by Stefano Annoni with music by Francesco Marchetti and is proposed on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Walter Chiari's death.

At 12pm the classical music concert "Intrecci a due Violini: Leclair, Reger, Bartok and Ligeti" will be held by the graduates and students of the Civic music school Claudio Abbado Martina Verna and Maurizio Ghezzi. All events will take place in compliance with safety protocols. Entry is free with reservations required by Friday 15 June 25.
