Mobility. Isola district, from 2022 a limited traffic area in the evening and night hours

Milan, March 7 2021 – Starting next year, a new Limited Traffic Zone will be established in the Isola district, active from 20pm to 6am every day of the week, to protect resident citizens.

This is the decision taken by the municipal administration to improve the liveability conditions of the neighborhood, protect residents' parking and avoid critical issues in terms of urban safety due to intense traffic, especially at night.

The Isola neighborhood is very lively and sees not only a notable commercial presence but also numerous bars and restaurants, as well as various social gathering places, capable of attracting, particularly in the evening, many people and a large influx of cars. Not only that, the great demand for parking to access activities adds to the needs of residents to find space for their cars.

On the other hand, the area is in a strategic position, well served from the point of view of public transport due to its proximity to the Garibaldi railway and underground stations, the Central station and Piazzale Maciachini and around it there are various car parks in the structure.

Furthermore, the neighborhood is the subject of tactical urban planning interventions in Piazza Minniti and in Via Toce and the Bussa overpass which encourage the use of alternative and sustainable mobility.

The vitality of the neighborhood involves the presence of a large number of pedestrians and a significant influx of cars and this has already highlighted some critical issues that the nocturnal restricted traffic zone will mitigate for the benefit of greater safety and urban liveability as well as the necessary protection of parking reserved for residents and to those who wish to access the commercial establishments on the edge of the area.

“The Isola neighborhood is full of activities and is a place of great social aggregation – says Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works – which attracts many people every evening. The choice to create a nocturnal restricted traffic zone serves to reduce the great vehicular pressure on the affected area, guaranteeing safety for pedestrians and greater liveability for all residents. With today we are taking the first step in a construction process that will be completed with the installation and switching on of the cameras."

By way of derogation from the prohibitions, transit and parking will be permitted for residents and those domiciled in the localities included in the identified area, for people with disabilities, for bicycles and obviously for rescue, emergency and police vehicles, and for emergency support vehicles. demonstrations, events and essential services, subject to authorization from the competent local police area command, to taxis and vehicles used for rental services with driver. However, transit will only be permitted to owners of garages or parking spaces located within the area and to vehicles headed to the parking facilities in the structure whose access is from the streets included in the area covered by the Limited Traffic Zone provision.

In detail, the provision will apply in the quadrilateral delimited by via Guglielmo Pepe, via Carlo Farini, via Stelvio, viale Zara and with the inclusion of the area between via Pola, via Ippolito Rosellini, via Filippo Sassetti and via Gaetano de Castillia and the Bussa flyover.

In the meantime, in order to offer a greater parking offer to residents, various interventions are being implemented which are increasing the "yellow" parking offer dedicated exclusively to residents with 196 stalls, some new like those in Viale Zara and partly the result of the transformation from blue (paid for those coming from outside the area) to yellow.
