Mobility. M1, the feasibility project for the extension from Bisceglie to Baggio has been approved

Milan, 12 December 2020 - The Council approved the technical-economic feasibility project for the extension of the M1 underground line from the Bisceglie station to Baggio-Olmi. The next stage for the realization of the project is the definitive approval expected for 2021.

Second only to the Brianza basin, the priority for the development of mass public transport concerns the area south-west of Milan, where today the M1 stops in Bisceglie. Here there are the populous neighborhoods of Baggio, Valsesia, Olmi, Muggiano, Mengoni, the adjacent municipalities of Cesano Boscone, Settimo Milanese, Cusago and the connection of the state road 114 with the ring road for the entry into the city of cars coming from Cisliano, Albairate , Abbiategrasso, the west of the metropolitan city of Milan.

Extending the M1 branch by just over three kilometers to create as many new stations and connect neighborhoods, municipalities and extra-urban roads to the metropolitan network, will allow citizens who gravitate to these areas not to use private cars or leave them on the outskirts of Milan, improving air quality and avoiding traffic congestion in neighborhoods such as Baggio, Olmi and Valsesia which today are connected to the subway system only through buses departing from Bisceglie. Furthermore, it will be avoided to saturate the street parking spaces intended for residents of Bisceglie, Forze Armate, Inganni, Primaticcio, Saint-Bon, Bande Nere, aiming to encourage the use of local public transport, with the expansion of available infrastructure.

"The project to extend the M1 from Bisceglie to Baggio continues the necessary process within the agreed timescales - declares Marco Granelli, Councilor for Mobility -. In September 2016 we acquired the 8 million from the Pact for Milan with the Government which allowed us to give impetus to planning; in December 2018 we participated in the tender of the Ministry for Infrastructure which assigned resources for cities in terms of mass public transport and thus we acquired 210 million euros, to which the Municipality adds 140 million euros to reach to the 350 needed to carry out an important work for tens of thousands of citizens of Milan and the metropolitan city. Now the project has taken a further step and we are proceeding towards the final and the tender to award the works".

The extension extends for approximately 3,3 kilometers from the current Bisceglie terminus of the M1 Line. Three new stations are planned and, in particular, those of Parri-Valsesia, Baggio and Olmi, all underground and within the municipal territory. The new route added to the 4,46 kilometers of the line branch already in operation between the Pagano and Bisceglie stations, including 7 stations, allows for an overall development of approximately 8 kilometers and 10 stations, for a total, across the entire Line 1 , of 43 stations for approximately 32 kilometers in length.

From the maneuvering pole of the Bisceglie station the route continues along Via Parri, passes under the Olona drainage canal and, having crossed the new PII Parri district, at the height of the Valsesia district, 617 meters from the start of the intervention, it is the first Parri-Valsesia station was located which is about one kilometer away from the current terminus of Bisceglie. This station will also be easily reachable from the town of Cesano Boscone through the shopping centre. Continuing westwards, still along Via Parri, the route continues for around 900 meters up to Baggio station, located in the area close to the post office building which has excellent accessibility: the historic center is around 500 meters away and the most densely populated areas of the Baggio district are precisely those between the historic center and the new station. Continuing from Baggio station, after a short straight that allows you to pass the road junction of the Castrovillari-Luraghi flyover, the line bends southwards beyond Via Sandro Pertini. After about 650 meters you reach the Olmi district, the station will be located within the sports areas along Via degli Ulivi which will be redeveloped. This station will also be easily reachable by the inhabitants of the Muggiano district which is about 8-900 meters away and by a part of the Municipality of Cesano Boscone. The route continues straight for about 300 meters and then bends northwards to the new covered depot with the function of storing rolling stock which was completely absent until now.

The new stations of the M1 extension will also be reachable via cycle paths, partly already existing and partly to be integrated, in order to facilitate direct accessibility also to residents who are within a radius of 1.000/1.500 meters from the underground line. The definitive project, as part of the external arrangement of the new stations, will take into account the need to provide a suitable number of parking spaces for bicycles or, possibly, the possibility of creating actual bike stations. The best solution for an interchange car park is still being studied, which must be reachable directly from the main road without using the neighborhood roads and consuming as little land as possible, but useful for interrupting the flow of cars entering the city today.
