Mobility. Public areas identified for six underground car parks

The first four structures under construction will be able to accommodate approximately one thousand cars

Milan, August 12 2021 – The Administration has started a reconnaissance to verify the most suitable locations for the creation of in-structure and underground parking in public areas, to promote the full use of the parking offer in dedicated structures, with the aim of freeing the streets from parking long-term and recover spaces to be dedicated to public transport, cycling and pedestrian mobility, greenery and, more generally, urban redevelopment.

Ten locations already identified by the 2003 urban parking program were examined, respectively in the areas of Borsa Ovest, Sant'Ampellio, Brasilia, Carrara, Repubblica east side, Scalabrini, Tolstoj, Borgogna, Manin and Repubblica west side and were updated the assessments with respect to the changed context, mobility and residential needs, innovating the analysis approach and taking into account the new needs and objectives of sustainability and liveability expressed in particular by the Urban Sustainable Mobility Plan (PUMS) approved last 2018 .

"Ensuring parking for residents and on a rotating basis is our priority, preferably in underground and dedicated structures – declares the councilor for Mobility Marco Granelli –. Over the years, mobility needs have changed, thanks to new metropolitan lines and the strengthening of the transport networks public surface transport. The collective approach towards urban spaces has also changed and we promote this trend towards increasingly sustainable transport with an ever lower impact on air quality and liveability and the use of alternative means of transport. car or sharing. For this reason it was necessary to redefine which structures must be created in relation to the changing needs. Freeing the streets and squares from long-term parking means creating more space for public transport and for citizens".

There are six structures for residential and rotational parking still considered strategic: Borgogna, currently under construction, Scalabrini, Brasilia and Repubblica on the east side with works that will start by the beginning of 2022 for a total capacity of these four structures of approximately 1.000 parking spaces, and finally Manin and Repubblica on the west side.

Among the structures deemed unfeasible is that of Piazzale Carrara which would be located under an area now dedicated to greenery, compromising it and Tolstoy due to the changed road conditions.

For Borsa Ovest and Sant'Ampellio, evaluations are still underway with the concessionary operator by the transport and parking area of ​​the municipal administration
