Mobility. 3.500 sharing electric scooters are arriving

Municipality authorizes four new operators

Milan, May 16 2020 - The fleet of shared scooters is expanding: in the next few weeks 3.500 new electric scooters will be on the streets in Milan. The Administration has in fact selected and authorized five new companies to operate in the city for the sharing of electric micromobility vehicles. The vehicles are added to the 2.250 already present as an alternative for travel in the post-lockdown phase.

The companies that will be able to provide scooter sharing services are EM Transit, Ride Hive Operations, LMTS Italy, Govolt and Bird Rides Italy and join the companies already present in the area for a few months, Wind Mobility, Bit Mobility and Helbiz Italia.

The selected companies will now have to complete the formalities and the authorization process and as soon as they are ready they will be able to start their sharing activity in compliance with the rules that had already been defined by the Administration at the publication of the notice and which concern both the characteristics of the means and how to use electric scooters on the street.

Following the national legislation in force, electric scooters can circulate throughout the municipal territory on roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h, on extra-urban roads, on cycle paths, always maintaining a maximum speed of 25 km/h when circulating on the carriageway and 6 km/h in pedestrian areas.

Scooters can park exclusively in parking spaces dedicated to bicycles or on the side of the road, where it is not expressly prohibited and in any case always in accordance with the rules of the Highway Code. In the Cerchia dei Navigli, where there is no free parking, scooters can activate and close the rental only in one of the over 4.300 bicycle parking stalls through technological systems created by the management companies. In Milan there are over 32 thousand bicycle parking stalls throughout the city, of which 6.900 are outside Municipality 1 and located in the areas adjacent to the metro stops and 3.350 are located along the cycle paths. Bike stalls are growing continuously due to new installations which also take into account the introduction of new vehicles.

“We are working to broaden the mobility offer - declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works -. An objective that we have had for some time but which now, considering the limitations of distancing on the public transport network, has become an imperative. Giving citizens alternatives and allowing flexible and light transport complementary to buses and subways will allow us to contain congestion and also pollution levels in the city. However, it is important to respect the rules of the road and always move, whatever means of transport we use, with common sense and respect for everyone."

The Administration is also working with all the companies that manage the sharing vehicles to improve the safety of the vehicles and their constant sanitization.
