Mobility. In Milan the yellow flag of FIAB-ComuniCiclabili.

Milan, July 15 2021 - From today Milan is also in the FIAB-ComuniCiclabili network. The recognition from the Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation, which evaluates and certifies the level of cycling in Italian municipalities, accompanying them on a virtuous path towards bike-friendly policies, was delivered this morning to Mobility Councilor Marco Granelli.

“I am very happy to take this yellow flag for Milan. Thank you! – declared Councilor Granelli –. I know well that a lot of work still needs to be done both as regards the connections of the cycle paths and the consent that citizens give to the development of the network. Every day, in recent months, over 9 thousand cyclists travel along Corso Buenos Aires, the largest commercial artery in the city, but in the face of this encouraging number many find reasons to dissent. We work so that time proves the cycle paths right. Initiatives like this and the constant dialectical collaboration with FIAB are certainly an incentive towards a more sustainable city where there is space for every type of safe mobility".

To date, there are over 150 Italian cities that have received the Ciclabile Municipality recognition from FIAB: from small towns to larger towns up to provincial and regional capitals which, overall, represent over 18% of the Italian population, or 11 million of the people living there.

“We are honored by the entry of a metropolitan capital of the caliber of Milan into the network Cycle Municipalities, which confirms the authoritativeness of the project based on a detailed evaluation work of the different parameters of cycling through field checks carried out by our team - says Alessandro Tursi, president of FIAB-Italian Federation of the Environment and Bicycle -. The city is undertaking incisive policies for sustainable mobility. The score of 2 bike-smiles assigned for 2021 is the snapshot of a large and complex reality headed towards a virtuous and necessary transition".

The recognition FIAB-ComuniCiclabili gives the territories a score from 1 to 5 assigned on the basis of various parameters and indicated on the yellow flag with the "bike-smile" symbol. Four areas of evaluation: urban mobility (urban cycle paths/infrastructures, traffic calming and speed), governance (urban mobility policies and services), communication and promotion and cycle tourism.
Among the aspects highlighted in the final judgment for Milan we can read: the capillarity of bike-sharing such as to have contributed to triggering the transition towards new daily habits, the interventions for traffic and speed moderation, the positive use of new cycling tools light included in the Highway Code, the decline in the rate of motorisation. But also the positive commitment of governance through the PUMS (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan), which will now have to be fully put into practice, and the tactical urbanism initiatives.

“We appreciate the choice of the Municipality of Milan in submitting to the scrutiny of a body that gives objective assessments on the state of affairs and the results achieved to encourage cycling, thus joining a project that opens up comparison with the other Cycling Municipalities in Italy - comments Guia Biscàro, president of FIAB Ciclobby Milano -. In our opinion, this is a very positive signal because it indicates the desire to grow and develop the path that is establishing itself throughout Europe: public space shared and redistributed for all functions and among all users, greater safety on roads, recognition and valorisation of all forms of active mobility (on foot and by bicycle)”.

There are 15 territories in Lombardy that are members of FIAB-ComuniCiclabili. Among the capital cities there are Bergamo, Brescia and Lecco, the latter being a new entry for 2021 like Milan. In the province of Milan the cycle municipalities are: Segrate, San Donato Milanese, Cernusco sul Naviglio, Cassina de' Pecchi, Gaggiano and Rescaldina.
The range is completed by Crema (CR), Saronno (VA), Desio (MB), Sulbiate (MB) and Borgarello (PV).
