Mobility. In December 35 km of new cycle paths in Milan

Work starts on Wednesday 29 April in Piazza San Babila

Milan, 24 April 2020 - For the 'post lockdown', Milan is working on a plan that involves the reorganization of the city's times and services with the need to contain the contagion and allow travel.

First of all, public transport will be made safe. Buses, trams and subways, for example, will have to provide a limited number of accesses and passenger distancing must be guaranteed inside each carriage: we are thinking of drawing circles on the floors of the carriages to visually indicate the safety distance from respect.

To contain the number of cars in circulation and congestion and limit the possible increase in city air pollution, the city of Milan aims to encourage the use of bicycles, normal or pedal-assisted, and electric scooters, both private and shared, but also of electric scooters. For this reason, the Municipality of Milan has asked the Government and the Region to implement contributions and incentives for bikes and scooters.

The municipal administration is planning the construction, by the end of the year, of 35 kilometers of new cycle paths which will be added to the current 220 km and new parking spaces for bicycles and motorbikes. The extension of the cycle network between now and December 2020 will concern routes along the main radial and circular routes of the city, connecting the existing cycle routes.

The first implementation phase of this strategy involves the creation of approximately 23 kilometers of cycle paths starting from next Wednesday 29 April which will be progressively completed by the end of summer 2020. We start with the San Babila - Sesto Marelli itinerary created in solo signage, i.e. not delimited by curbs but only by stripes drawn on the ground that will run between the pavement and the row of parked cars or along the service roads. The first stretch will be practicable by mid-May up to the Bastions of Porta Venezia, then by mid-June along Corso Buenos Aires to arrive in Viale Monza - Sesto Marelli at the end of July for a total of 6 kilometers of cycle path.

Another type of intervention envisaged concerns the service roads where, thanks to the reduction of the speed to 30 kilometers per hour, the safe use of the bicycle will be encouraged, for example in Viale Certosa, Viale Zara – Viale Testi, Viale Romagna – Viale Campagna – Viale Molise , viale Famagosta - via Faenza.

Other interventions for cycling concern urban redevelopment, for example along the Legioni Romane – Bern – Zurich route and the Bussa – Farini - Monumental Cemetery route. Work on the Monterosa cycle path, from Buonarroti to Amendola, is also expected to be completed by the summer.
