Sustainable mobility. Cascina Merlata, two BikeMi stations active from today

The new installations strengthen the local public transport system and promote the liveability of the 30 hectares of park, with 10 km of cycle and pedestrian paths connected to MIND and the center of Milan

Milan, February 2 2021 - From today two new BikeMi stations are active, the Clear Channel bicycle sharing service managed by Atm. The stations are in the new UpTown - Cascina Merlata district and host 30 and 36 bike spaces respectively.

The two infrastructures were financed by EuroMilano spa, a real estate promotion and development company promoting the urban regeneration plan of UpTown - Cascina Merlata, and by the HS Cascina Merlata Real Estate Fund managed by InvestiRE SGR (Banca Finnat Group), promoter of the residential complex of Social Housing “Cascina Merlata Social Village”.

One station, “Cascina Merlata / UpTown”, is located at the historic Cascina Merlata building, the Community Center and the second station, “Cascina Merlata Social Village”, is in the square north of the district, near the entrance to the complex residential “Social Village”.
Both are part of the Milanese bike sharing network of Municipality 8 and integrate public mobility from the Sempione axis to the MM1 Molino Dorino station. With this investment EuroMilano and InvestiRE SGR strengthen the interconnection already guaranteed by line 35 with line MM1.

Consisting of a total of 320 stations, the bikeMi network is managed exclusively by Clear Channel Italia and has 4.280 muscle pedal bikes and 1.150 pedal assisted ones, of which 150 are equipped with child seats. BikeMi is one of the most advanced examples in Europe of bike sharing integrated with surface transport and subways, a means of public transport on two wheels. It is an easy, practical and ecological system that helps improve the quality of the environment and physical well-being. Active 365 days a year, bikeMi is operational from 6am to midnight.

The installation of the two new stations is an initiative that promotes the liveability of the large 30-hectare park, which crosses the new neighborhood from south to north, offering residents and visitors a green context with 10 kilometers of cycle-pedestrian paths connected to MIND and with the center of Milan through the “Eurovelo 5” cycle paths that connect the Arco della Pace with this district.

UpTown is in fact a neighborhood designed and built entirely to reduce the urban heat island effect, where walking and cycling are promoted, through safe, attractive and comfortable routes in the park and between residential buildings, in order to encourage daily physical activity and, consequently, public health. The objective is 360° sustainability, of which soft mobility is one of the pillars to achieve the three social, economic and environmental dimensions, reducing the impact on the environment, promoting the involvement of the social community and reducing costs for local economy.
“I am very happy to be here to inaugurate two new bikeMi stations – declares Marco Granelli, Councilor for Mobility – and I thank EuroMilano and InvestiRE Sgr very much for the commitment they have made and which they are completing today. This is the sign of a strong collaboration between public and private and we would like it to be developed in other areas of the city too, in order to create an increasingly dense and useful network of infrastructures for sustainable mobility. In the coming months, Milan will reach 324 kilometers of radial and circular cycle paths, for an increasingly interconnected city."

“The implementation of services in a context undergoing great transformation such as that of UpTown - Cascina Merlata is the sign of the excellent synergy created between the public sector and the private sector - declares Attilio Di Cunto, CEO of EuroMilano - We have already tested it, successfully , in other areas of Milan and in Municipality 8 in particular, when, for example, we participated in the redevelopment of the Civic Center of the Bonola district. The objective was and is to encourage the birth of a community spirit, which allows residents to identify with the place, providing opportunities for sharing spaces and public and private structures".
