Mobility. M2, waterproofing of the tunnels begins on July 15th

Milan, July 7 2019 -  Work continues for the complete renovation of the Green line, the longest in Milan, which with 40 kilometers and 35 stations from Assago and Abbiategrasso in the south reaches Gessate and Cologno, transporting 120 million passengers a year. The works, divided into different phases, involve a total investment of over 440 million euros by the Administration and ATM.

From 15 July we will enter the second phase which directly concerns the metropolitan line, i.e. the waterproofing designed by MM to avoid flooding caused by the rising water table. The tunnel roof will be consolidated with injections of cement and silicates to form a sort of shell which will increase its stability.

For the execution of these important modernization works, slowdowns and interruptions to the transit of the Green line will be inevitable: from 15 to 31 July and from 2 to 13 September, but only after 21.30 pm from Monday to Friday, trains between Caiazzo and Lambrate they will pass with a reduced frequency because they will travel, in both directions, on the same track. For the entire month of August, from the beginning to the end of the service, traffic will be suspended between Udine and Loreto.

Trains will continue to run normally on the rest of the line.
In this period, ATM will activate an expansion of surface transport in the area not served by the M2 with three interventions: a replacement bus service between Loreto and Udine with stops in Piola and Lambrate; a new non-stop Cascina Gobba-Loreto bus for travel from the center of Milan to Gessate/Cologno or vice versa: it will therefore be possible to take the buses that connect the Cascina Gobba and Loreto stations without making intermediate stops; strengthening of the frequencies planned for the surface lines 39, 53, 55, 56, 75, 81, 90/91.

Timely information on all changes to the line will be available on the website and the app AtmFurthermore, social media channels, newsletters, announcements in stations and on board trains and cars, displays at stops, monitors in mezzanines, maps and signs in stations, leaflets, customer service staff will be activated.

The longest metro line in Milan, second in age after the 'red', is also the subject of renovation works on the signaling system, renewal of the trains, replacement of the turnstiles with the anti-tax evader model, renewal of the electricity network, noise abatement and improving accessibility. The most important and also the longest of the interventions on the M2 will concern the new signaling system that regulates the circulation of trains, as already done with the M1 in 2011. This will allow the frequency of trains to be increased, from one every 150 seconds to it will go to one every 90-120 seconds, increasing transport capacity by 30% (from 40 thousand to 52 thousand passengers per hour). The works will only be carried out at night so as not to interrupt the line and the work is expected to be completed in 2024.
