Sustainable mobility. Experimentation with electric micromobility begins

The circulation of scooters, Segways, hoverboards, skateboards and single-wheels in pedestrian areas begins. Cycle paths, cycle paths and 30 zones will be accessible after the signage has been installed

Milan, July 26 2019 – The Administration starts the experimentation of electric micro mobility and today defined the streets where the circulation of scooters, Segways, hoverboards, skateboards and single-wheels is allowed.

This provision implements the guidelines established by the Ministry of Transport on 4 June. The trial will last one year.

“A very interesting period for us. Scooters and other electric micro-vehicles, like bicycles, – declares Marco Granelli, Councilor for Mobility and Public Works – contribute to improving the quality of urban mobility, provided, however, that they are taken seriously by those who use them. They are not toys and the road is not a carousel, which is why we were clear in defining the areas where they can circulate in order to guarantee everyone's safety. Those who use them must do so with caution and attention for themselves and others. Above all, it is good to remember, sidewalks are made for pedestrians."

The circulation of micro electric mobility vehicles in Milan is permitted in pedestrian areas as long as the speed of the vehicle does not exceed 6 kilometers per hour, on cycle and pedestrian paths and paths and in Zone 30 with a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour. Roads paved with river stones and preferential lanes are prohibited, even in Zone 30. The decree requires the devices to be equipped with a speed limiter.

Other restrictions concern roads where tram rails are present, unless they are in a separate roadway, in dead-end parking areas, and in pedestrian tunnels. For these reasons, specific bans will apply in some sections of the following streets: via Case Rotte, corso Di Porta Vittoria, via Orefici, via Disciplini, Gattamelata, largo Raffaele Mattioli, viale Duilio, via Campo Lodigiano, via Cordusio, via Porlezza, largo Maria Callas , via Dante, via Larga, via Melone, via Del Carmine, via and alley Ciovassino via Olmetto, via San Simpliciano, alley San Giovanni Sul Muro, via Carlo Ottavio Cornaggia, via Ripa Di Porta Ticinese (road area), via Giuseppe Mazzini, via Gaetano Giardino, via Spadari, via Victor Hugo, via Cesare Cantù, via Armorari, via Broletto, via Tommaso Grossi, via Santa Margherita, piazza Della Scala (in front of Teatro alla Scala), via San Giovanni sul Muro, via dell'Orso, via Arco, via Santa Maria delle Grazie.

The experimentation will begin tomorrow, Saturday 27 July, in the pedestrian streets, while for the cycle and pedestrian paths and lanes and in the 30 Zones we will have to wait for the signage to be installed, as required by the ministerial decree. There are two hundred road signs dedicated to electric micromobility.

The parking of scooters and other micro-vehicles is permitted in the parking stalls dedicated to bicycles or on the side of the road where parking is not expressly prohibited and in any case never in conflict with the provisions of the highway code and always with common sense so that they do not constitute an obstacle or a danger.
