Underground Milan. M4 Linate station construction site and Piazza Grandi air raid shelter, extraordinary openings to citizens on Saturday 25th

Free guided tours into the future and the past, to discover the first Blue station to come into operation and the 25 rooms that gave shelter to hundreds of people during the war. The initiatives in the “Open House Milan 2019” schedule

Milan, May 20 2019 - On Saturday 25 May two unmissable events in the underground Milan of the future and the past: the M4 Open Day returns, from 10am to 18pm the Linate Station construction site will be open to citizens; Furthermore, the Air Raid Shelter in Piazza Grandi will be opened on an extraordinary basis from 10am to 16pm, for a journey through time, history and memory of Milan.

It will be the technicians involved in the construction of the Blu, the new Milan metro, who will guide visitors to discover a fundamental work for mobility in Milan. Linate Station plays a very particular double role: it will be the underground line that will allow airport users to reach the city center in a few minutes and the first stop of the Blu to open the turnstiles to the public. Entry into operation is in fact scheduled for January 2021 (with the first three stops, from Linate to Forlanini Fs).

Visits to the M4 construction site in Linate are free and will take place in groups of approximately 25 people. For entry it will be necessary to register starting from 9 am with a valid identity document at the welcome stand located near door n.30 of the arrivals floor of Linate airport (a few steps from the bus terminus 8 ). For those who wish, it is possible to download the release from the website M4 and bring it on Saturday already filled out at the entrance. No reservations are expected and groups will be formed at the moment. It is recommended to wear comfortable footwear. Entrance will also be allowed to children aged 5 and over. There are architectural barriers (stairs) on the construction site. The M4 Open Day is promoted by the Municipality of Milan and carried out, with the support of MM spa, by the M4 concessionaire company, whose members are the Municipality itself, the construction companies (Salini Impregilo, Astaldi, Hitachi Rail STS, Hitachi Rail SpA , Sirti) and the ATM manager.

The visit to the Rifugio Aereo in Piazza Grandi is also free and is organized by Neiade Milano.Tours. It will allow citizens to discover a still little-known place in the city's history. During the day you will be able to visit the 25 rooms which during the war could shelter up to 400 people, retracing the pain and fear through the numerous writings on the walls - a true historical testimony that has survived to this day preserved and unaltered by time - enhanced by the new lighting system. The journey down memory lane also passes through the recently restored attacks inside the shelter where the drinking water buckets for hidden people were once attached. The one in Piazza Grandi is one of the best preserved anti-aircraft shelters in the whole city. To visit the refuge you need to book through this link.

The two visits are part of the events of "Open House Milan 2019" now in its fourth edition. OHM celebrates the architectural heritage and urban design of the Lombardy capital by opening the doors of institutional buildings, private homes and studios, construction sites, urban regeneration works, galleries and museums, production sites and former industrial buildings in just one weekend, as well as all those sites testify to its constant transformation, with the redevelopment of peripheral areas, the verticality of the contemporary skyline and the valorisation of the historical-artistic heritage.
