Milan for school. Prefect Saccone and Mayor Sala present the pact for the restart

Milan, 29 December 2020 – Full support of all social partners, public institutions, transport managers, commerce, companies, professional bodies in the “Milan for school” pact which was presented this morning by Prefect Renato Saccone and Mayor Giuseppe Sala and which will guarantee secondary school students the safe return to class starting from January 7th and the city to be able to function at its best.

A shared work that highlighted the sense of belonging of all the components to the same community with the priority objective of restarting the school.

The Pact provides for the reorganization of travel in the morning time slot 7-10am, considered, based on the study by the Polytechnic University of Milan, to be the most congested time slot for local public transport.

In detail, the first school entrance will be expected by 8 am, the remaining part of the children will have to enter after 9 am. Therefore on 30 January, when schools reopen, 7% of students will enter by 8am and the remaining 40% by 9am, to gradually allow 30% of students to return to class (divided respectively into 10% and 75%).
Public services to citizens will open after 9am, by appointment.

Non-food trade (excluding newsagents, tobacconists, pharmacies and parapharmacies) will start at 10am. Personal services, as well as banking, insurance and financial services, will be able to open after 15am.

As regards companies, production activities in the manufacturing sector will be asked to bring forward the start time to 8 am; the others, in particular regarding the administrative, management and consultancy sectors, will open after 9.
Professionals will be able to receive clients after 10am, preferably by appointment.
Universities will be invited to start in-person lessons from 10:00.

The pact intends to promote, both within companies and in the public sector, an increasingly careful evaluation of the optimal use of smartworking. A concrete reorganization of the city's times will generate positive effects on a complex and lively system such as that of the Milanese metropolitan city and the capital in particular, accustomed to hosting over a million city users every day - before Covid. And, strategically, it will constitute a fundamental test for the organization of the post-pandemic city.

The 'Milan for school' pact was drawn up in synergy with the municipal administration as part of the prefectural coordination table and thanks to the contribution of the Polytechnic of Milan on the timetables of activities and the local public transport service.
