Milan, July 28 2020 – From 31 July to 2 August 2020 Milan hosts the fourth edition of Milano Museo city, an initiative promoted by the Municipality of Milan | Culture and created in collaboration with the Museocity Association, created to raise awareness of the richness of the artistic heritage of city museums and enhance their cultural function. During the three days, from Friday to Sunday, all the civic museums will remain open, from 11am to 18pm.

Starting from 31 July, the 72 museums involved open their doors to the public, physical or virtual, offering hundreds of events including guided tours, extraordinary openings and special initiatives, all characterized by the common thread of the theme "Women Protagonists", in line with the theme "The talents of women" of the 2020 cultural schedule promoted and coordinated by the Culture Department of the Municipality of Milan.

This year's edition of Milano MuseoCity, in fact, aims to highlight not only the talents of artists, collectors and intellectuals, but also to enhance works from Milanese museum collections that depict women: a way to bring to the attention of public commitment, creativity and female intuition, with the dual purpose of highlighting the city's precious heritage and promoting a culture that recognizes the important contribution of women to history and contemporary society.

The event - which is part of "Aria di cultura", the cultural program of the Milanese summer - involves around 80.000 people every year and over the years has come to include, in the city and the metropolitan area, over 85 art museums , history, scientific museums, house museums, artists' houses, archives and business museums protagonists of meetings, exhibitions and events aimed at enhancing their cultural function and heritage.

This year, to ensure the greatest possible participation in compliance with safety regulations, the 72 public and private institutions participating in the event are proposing a program based on the new needs for distancing and limited entry, but also many digital initiatives: 28 are the institutions that they offer in-person events, 26 only digitally and 17 those that present both in-person and virtual activities.

Among the institutions present for the first time: the Atelier Pharaildis Van den Broeck Archive, with a new exhibition project, focused on the theme Women as Protagonists, which presents unpublished works by the artist together with archive materials; the Rachele Bianchi Archive, which opens the virtual doors to the rich production of the sculptor; the Historical Archive Fondazione Fiera Milano, which participates in the Secret Museum with a video entitled Women in the history of the Trade Fair; CASVA, Center for Advanced Studies on the Visual Arts of the Municipality of Milan, which presents the video “Plural Female Protection. CASVA & QT8 @CONtainer CONTENT CONTEXT. Visioni” which sees the extraordinary participation of the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendence of Lombardy; the Ca' Granda Foundation with an extraordinary opening; MEET Digital Culture Center, which offers three videos on the theme of cultural innovation with the Meet the Media format; the Capuchin Museum – Milan, which reopened in November 2019 after a long renovation, and organizes guided tours by appointment; the Fratelli Cozzi Museum, with a presentation video on the MuseoCity YouTube channel; the MuTeF | Puppet Theater Museum, a museum not yet open, showing a preview of its spaces and projects.

Like every year, the Museo city Association takes care of some of the most important special initiatives of the event: "Invisible Museum" (from Friday 31 July), a virtual behind the scenes of the museums, a podcast to introduce yourself and talk about yourself, uploaded on the Museocity channels ; “Secret Museum (31 July - 2 August), an itinerary curated by Gemma Sena Chiesa dedicated to The ladies of museums, which allows each participating museum to present works from its collection inspired by the female world: from the women depicted in paintings and sculptures, to the collectors, donors, benefactors of an institution, from the testimonies of the love for Art of great female figures, to the attention dedicated to equal opportunities in scientific and business collections.

The conference "Women and innovation in the contemporary museum" will take place on Saturday 1 August, which will be broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Museocity Association: a public debate with international protagonists dedicated to the best practices of some women committed to changing the common perception of the museum, making it a place of welcome and training for different audiences.

The “Invisible Museum” podcast and the videos of the international conference will remain available online even after the end of the event.

The 2020 edition is also enriched thanks to "Diffuse Museum": an APP (downloadable at the link app.museocity.it) with all the information on the participating museums, on the works of art present on the facades of twentieth-century Milanese buildings and on over 40 works of street art in augmented reality granted by MAUA-Museo Arte Urbana Augmented, to discover city itineraries outside the center and ordinary art circuits.

Among the special initiatives worth mentioning: the exhibition “Roberto Cotroneo. In the theater of art”, curated by Denis Curti at Palazzo Reale - Princes' Apartment; Friday 31 July, at 18.30 pm, the guided tour of the “Franco Grignani.
