Mayor Sala: "A respectable man, loved by Italians, who fought for fair justice"

Milan 18 May 2021 – Milan has chosen to remember Enzo Tortora and did so with a plaque placed in via dei Piatti 8, where the beloved Italian presenter and politician lived the last years of his life. Today, on the anniversary of his death, which occurred in 1988, the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala, the councilor Lorenzo Lipparini, friends, party militants, neighbors, gathered together with Tortora's partner, Francesca Scopelliti for the ceremony of unveiling the license plate. A moment full of meaning that left everyone very moved.

"Enzo Tortora, first as a presenter and then as a politician - said Mayor Sala - was a familiar face for all Italians, a kind and affable man. The legal case that painfully marked the last years of his life, which passed between prison, house arrest here in via Piatti and freedom, following the full acquittal, never undermined his integrity, his calm tones and his truly being a decent man. This is how we want to remember him today in Milan , his city with all the affection of the Milanese who knew him in person, through video, in his political battles for fair justice".

The decision to dedicate a commemorative plaque to Enzo Tortora was formalized on 20 August 2020 by the municipal council which decided on its implementation by implementing the motion approved by the municipal council in the session of 30 September 2019.

Tortora returned to his home in via dei Piatti to serve his house arrest after spending almost a year in prison. He lived in that house until the day of his death, May 18, 1988, a year after his full acquittal in the Court of Appeal.

In Via dei Piatti the beloved host, who became a champion of civil rights, began his judicial and political battle in the ranks of the Radical Party. Many still remember his great humanity and the kindness that all Italians had known through the big screen and which he had never lost, despite the harshness of the events he suffered.

The commemorative plaque for Enzo Tortora is part of the Municipality's program of initiatives "Milan is memory". On the plaque it is written:

ENZO TORTORA (1925/1988)
Journalist and television presenter, a man of integrity and culture, unjustly arrested and convicted as a Camorra member. Finally found innocent, as President of the Radical Party from this house he led the battle for fair justice in Italy until his last breath.
