Milan, January 21 2022 – On the occasion of Remembrance Day, Milan is mobilizing with numerous initiatives starting today and a widespread local (and also virtual) program of exhibitions, concerts, guided tours, all in the name of testimony. In particular, twenty-four new Stumbling Stones will be placed in Milan, adding to the map of the 120 Stones already placed from 2017 to today in various places of the city's memory.

The presentation of the events hosted on the "Milan is memory" platform which will take place on 27 January took place today in the Sala Orologio at Palazzo Marino by the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala, the Senator for life Liliana Segre, honorary president of the Stumbling Stones Committee, and the president of Municipality 2, Simone Locatelli.

"Today I will have the privilege of meeting Lidia Maksymowicz – said Mayor Sala –, survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp and author of a truly touching book about her experience. And I have the great honor of having Liliana Segre at my side who is dedicating his life to testimony and does not fail to make his presence and closeness felt in our city. Remembering is a commitment which, on important occasions such as that of 27 January, is confirmed and strengthened, but which also goes beyond the ordinary. anniversaries. There is memory in the neighborhoods where history has left its mark, in the commitment of the many associations that work alongside the Administration to share, especially with young people, the story of the past and even in the murals which are often dedicated to faces and key moments of what happened in Milan. And I thank the university world and private individuals who, even on this occasion, have demonstrated how solid and virtuous the alliance with the public can be".

Instagram history
The Instagram page @milanopietredinciampo will forever preserve the digital reproduction of the stones that will be physically laid in the city.
Since last year this new virtual space, wanted by the Stones of Stumbling Committee and created in collaboration with Milano è memoria, represents in a simple and immediate way all the inscriptions, stories and images of the lives of the people to whom the stones are dedicated .

The Instagram History project was entrusted this year to students of the European Institute of Design (IED) courses, involving a total of 48 young people enrolled in the Graphic design, Creative direction and Digital communication strategy master's courses.
They were asked to create an Instagram carousel for each stone, visiting the streets of Milan, contacting the different town halls, talking to relatives and consulting the archives.

The program of events
A diversified schedule, with physical and virtual events; widespread in municipalities; dedicated to everyone, from adults to children, to schools.
The complete program is published on the Milano è memoria page and is still open to the collection and publication of new initiatives that may be organized for Remembrance Day.

It's impossible to tell them all, but we can ideally start from a photographic exhibition organized by SEA at Linate Airport (check-in floor) which starting from January 26th and until Sunday February 6th will tell the story of the denied childhood of the children of Terezin , through the poems and drawings made during his imprisonment, thanks to the reproductions of the original works preserved at the Jewish Museum in Prague.

It is the guided tour formula, the one chosen by the Foresta dei Giusti-Gariwo Onlus Foundation and the Or.Me Association.
The first will lead to the discovery of some symbolic places linked to the events of the Milanese Righteous who, risking their lives, saved numerous Jews and others persecuted during the Nazi occupation. The initiative "The memorial. A short guide to the memory of good" is for Tuesday 25 January.
"The painted village. Guide to the Ortica neighbourhood", by the curator Fabio Bedostri, will instead unfold among the colours, faces and stories told on the walls of the neighbourhood, with particular emphasis on those murals which more than others tell of the sad historical period which Remembrance Day recalls. Appointment Wednesday 26 January.
EUMM-Ecomuseo Urbano Metropolitano Milano Nord will also organize guided tours of the Breda bunkers in Sesto San Giovanni for citizens and schools (29 January-19 February-19 March).

Sky Sport will also participate in the program of events with a meeting sponsored by the Municipality of Milan, on the role of sport in the era of racial laws. "1938: Italian sport against the Jews" will take place on Tuesday 25 January.

It will be on January 27th that free in-person visits to the Shoah Memorial will return: for a whole day, from 9,30am to 20pm, it will be possible to visit one of the symbolic places for the city. The reception will be managed in collaboration with people detained at the 2nd Prison House of Milan Bollate as part of the RestART Bollate project, managed by the Articolo 3 Social Cooperative, which since 2002 has carried out socio-educational activities, study support and training within the prison and interventions to raise awareness among citizens.

The role of the Milanese municipalities is significant as they will host a series of events organized 'bottom-up' in the neighborhoods, small entities, cultural associations, schools... for the sharing and transmission of memories through theatrical performances and musical moments.
Among these, the concert to be held at the Teatro alla Scala on Monday 24 January, at 16 pm, organized by ANPI Milano and the concert "Milan remembers the Shoah" promoted by the Figli della Shoah association at the Conservatory.
