Milan, 25 June 2021 – Today, in Piazza della Scala, the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala inaugurated a stele in memory of Gianni Delle Foglie and Ivan Dragoni, where on 27 June 1992 their civil union was symbolically celebrated together with that of other homosexual couples.

The ceremony was attended by Paolo Hutter, who celebrated those first symbolic unions, Senator Monica Cirinnà, the honorary President of Arcigay Franco Grillini and the President of the Gay Initiative Center - Arcigay Milano Fabio Pellegatta.

The stele is the Administration's homage to what can be considered one of the first steps in the battle for the legal recognition of same-sex unions, framed in Italian law with the law of 20 May 2016, and to two of the its main promoters.

"Today we pay homage and justice to Gianni Delle Foglie and Ivan Dragoni - declared the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala -: the courageous battle for equality and recognition of the rights of the LGBTQA+ community for which they became spokespersons together with the other couples who 29 years ago they decided to unite civilly, in a symbolic way, here, in front of Palazzo Marino it will never be forgotten. With this stele we intend to commemorate the determination with which Gianni and Ivan defended their love and their bond, thus contributing to making Milan the city of rights that we all know, an open city that finds in respect and dialogue its tools to combat all forms of discrimination and violence".

The proposal for a memory of that moment was put forward to the Council by former city councilor Paolo Hutter and implemented in the context of the initiatives of the Milan is Memory Committee of the Mayor's Cabinet.
