Milan, May 18 2022 – Thirty years after the Capaci massacre, which took place on 23 May 1992, Milan is preparing to commemorate the victims of the terrible attack with ten days of initiatives dedicated to the themes of legality and the fight against the mafia. The figures of judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and the three men of the escort, Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro, killed by a bomb placed on the motorway a few kilometers from Palermo, will be remembered by the institutions, by Libera and others associations and above all from the boys and girls of the Milanese schools who had not yet been born thirty years ago but who have drawn values ​​and example.

The Thirtieth Anniversary celebrations are the result of the collaboration of numerous entities in the city that have committed themselves to spreading the culture of legality aimed above all at schools. The schedule was created thanks to the initiatives carried out by Libera, by the Coordination of Milanese Schools for Legality and Active Citizenship, by the Center for Legality of Milan, by the Chamber of Labour, by Teatro Carcano, by Wiki Mafia and ASD Macallesi, by individual schools, by the Municipalities and by the Municipality of Milan.

The culminating moment of the thirtieth anniversary celebrations will be the public commemoration scheduled for Monday 23 May, from 17 pm at Gardini Falcone e Borsellino (via Benedetto Marcello 4), in which the city authorities, Libera and the other associations involved in the various initiatives will participate. Interventions by Libera, the District Anti-Mafia Directorate and the Municipality of Milan are expected. Their words will be joined by the voices of Milanese students with some of the reflections on the topic of legality that emerged during the school workshops.

At 17pm, the exact time the bomb exploded in Capaci, the siren of a fire brigade vehicle from the nearby Marcello Barracks will sound and then leave room for a minute of silence. The moment will be closed by the notes of maestro Raffaele Kohler's trumpet.   
The ceremony will also be accompanied by the possibility of signing or dedicating a word on a white sheet dedicated to Judges Falcone and Borsellino.

A sheet painted by the girls and boys of the Libera school principals, with all the names of the victims of the 1992 massacres, will be exhibited between 22 and 23 May on the wall of the Volta scientific high school (via Benedetto Marcello 7) with a phrase memory of the massacres of 1992, in Capaci and in via D'Amelio and the names of the victims. Citizens, as well as students, will also be able to leave a thought.  

The celebrations will begin tomorrow, Thursday 19 May at 20 pm, at the Carcano Theater with "Capaci 30 years later". Luciano Tirindelli, Anselmo Lo Presti and Giuseppe Sammarco will go on stage together for the first time, the men of the "Quarto-Savona 30" escort who survived the Capaci massacre because they were assigned to one of the last cars. A special and unprecedented meeting that will be repeated on Friday 15 May at the Opera prison in the presence of prisoners and custodial staff.

On Friday 20 May we will continue with a three-day training session on legality and sport entitled "On our legs", organized by Libera. The sports tournament (basketball, five-a-side football and beach volleyball) will be the final event and will take place on the morning of Sunday 5 May at the Playmore sports center, in via della Moscova 22/A. In addition to the teams of children being tested, the teams of Libera, institutions and anyone who wants to register will also participate in the tournament. The tournament will be opened by the speech of Alessandra Dolci, coordinator of the DDA - Anti-Mafia District Directorate of Milan and will end in the afternoon with the prize-giving ceremony for the participants.

Most of the initiatives for the Thirtieth Anniversary will concern the schools for which a week of legality has been organised, from 23 to 27 May, created to culminate the educational path of the individual institutes and the result of the collaboration between the Coordination of Milanese schools for legality and Active citizenship and the Center for Legality of Milan. The program includes conferences, meetings and conferences, training days (also for teachers) and legality lunches. The week will be opened on Monday 23 May by the conference "Against the mafias, a stubborn, conscious and global approach of the entire state and civil society" Giovanni Falcone, Paolo Borsellino, Francesca Morvillo: on their legs, footsteps and ideas that still speak to us ", organized by the Coordination of Milanese schools for legality and active citizenship and the Center for legality of Milan, with the contribution of Libera Milano and the Antonino Caponnetto training school. Speakers will be Alessandra Dolci, Coordinator of the DDA of Milan, the President honorarium of Libera, Nando dalla Chiesa and some student representatives.

The celebrations for the thirtieth anniversary will end on Saturday 28 May with "In campo per Capaci", a 5-a-side football tournament, organized by WikiMafia and ACD Macallesi, from 10am to 18pm at the Macallesi football school in via Marco Fabio Quintiliano 46.

The thirtieth anniversary of the Capaci massacre is part of the Municipality's platform "Milan is memory".
