Milan Design city. Design culture is once again a protagonist in the city

Thirteen days and over 350 events created by 66 operators to discover how Milan and design are an inseparable expression of Made in Italy and creativity

Milan, September 15 2020 – Design returns as a protagonist in the city after the stop due to the Covid emergency. “Milan Design city” will take place from 28 September to 10 October, the event promoted by the Municipality of Milan and born from the collaboration with the most important protagonists in the world of design and creativity. An unmissable opportunity to promote the culture of design and relaunch Milan's vocation as a reference city for international design thanks to a rich calendar of over 350 digital or in-person initiatives including presentations, discussions, workshops, installations and meetings with the most important names in the world of industrial design and furniture.

There are 66 protagonists who will animate the Milan Design city calendar including: Triennale Milano, INTERNI, Association for industrial design (ADI), Polidesign, Polytechnic of Milan, Order of Architects of the Province of Milan, Rossana Orlandi, Superstudio group, Elle Decor, AD, as well as the design districts of via Durini, Brera, 5 vie, Santa Sofia and Molino delle Armi and brands such as Boffi, De Padova, Giorgetti, Cappellini, Cassina, Poltrona Frau, Lualdi Porte and Cimbali just to name a few.

Illustrating the contents of Milano Design city this morning at the Triennale, in the presence of the municipal administration, were the director of the Museum of Italian Design of Triennale Milano, Joseph Grima, the director of Interni, Gilda Bojardi, the president of ADI, Luciano Galimberti, Rossana Orlandi of the gallery of the same name and Paolo Casati of Studiolabo.

Among the topics addressed and analyzed by Milano Design city, particular attention will be paid to the culture of design and ideational processes alongside the increasingly relevant themes of circular economy, reuse and sustainability, investigating how these are orienting design and planning choices international. There will also be space for reflections on new ways of understanding urban spaces and the mobility of citizens and goods.

The calendar proposed by Milano Design city is rich and varied, starting with the unmissable free visits to the Museum of Italian Design of Triennale Milano conducted by the President of Triennale Stefano Boeri, the director of the Museum Joseph Grima, the designer Fabio Novembre and Marva Griffin, creator and curator of the Salone Satellite and many other guests. The visits will offer the public a personal and original perspective on the history of Italian design which will be retraced starting from the pieces on display: a selection of the most iconic and representative among the 1.600 objects in the Triennale Milano Collection.

The INTERNI DESIGNER'S WEEK initiative was born from the precious collaboration with the INTERNI magazine: over ten days of talks, conferences, debates and "onlife" events dedicated to the new collections and product previews which will take place in the showrooms and galleries of Milan and at company offices, in Italy and abroad. The magazine directed by Gilda Bojardi rekindles the creative spirit of Milan, spreading and amplifying projects, opinions, stories, ideas and people through a complex communication system that includes: the paper and online guide to Designer's week Milan, the digital newspaper Interni design journal, a circuit of eight DOOH LED walls in the most strategic points of the city, and the INTERNI Meeting point, set up in the headquarters of the Istituto Marangoni Milano Design school (via Cerva 24).

The protagonists of the event will also be the design districts such as the area between via Cesare Correnti, piazza Mentana, via Santa Marta and via San Maurilio which with “5 VIE D'N'A – Design & art for a better world” will suggest interesting food for thought on the profound link between social innovation and design thanks to the "It's circular" forum dedicated to the circular economy as well as various exhibitions on the topic.

The streets of Brera and beyond will host the "Fuorisalone Design city edition" curated by Studiolabo which, in continuity with the first digital edition of June 2020, offers events in the area, talks, workshops and round tables to delve deeper into issues related to the culture of project and design in its various forms. In Piazza XXV Aprile a participatory installation will propose a contest to promote the ideas of both designers and citizens through the collection of video contributions, images and texts for the improvement of post-Covid urban life.

For the first time, the “Molino Sofia Design district” will be presented to the public, the new reality dedicated to design developed between via Santa Sofia and via Molino delle Armi. In the Cairoli area, Cadorna DDA will present “DDN HUB Milano”, an initiative dedicated to design and architecture, living and experiencing space in a sustainable way and the Plana cultural association, at its headquarters, is proposing the ninth edition of “Design photo remix ” the exhibition in which photography and visual communication interpret design and its protagonists.

The showrooms in the city center also come alive with "Inspare design" by the Associazione Milano Durini design thanks to moments of discussion with architects and designers.
The Porta Romana Area district is also the protagonist with the event "Care as a theme for innovation" dedicated to the protection of modern Milanese architecture through sustainable urban redevelopment.

In the Tortona area Superstudio proposes "Nelle mani delle donne" the exhibition dedicated to female creativity between art, design and craftsmanship, composed of two complementary "souls": the first called "The flowers of matter" brings together designers and architects of different ages and backgrounds different with particular attention to the use of materials; the second “Narcisi fragile” is dedicated to contemporary artists who reflect on the precariousness of human life. Opificio 31 with "Tortona rock" hosts talks, debates and seminars whose common thread is "Future habit(at)" to talk about the need to design spaces suited to new increasingly 'digitalised' habits. At the Drogheria Tortona the protagonist will be “The underwood” the exhibition which, in an unusual natural setting with undergrowth plants, explores the relationship where public space and interiors merge. BASE Milan hosts the series of meetings "The future seen from the future" and talks and performances are planned in Tortoneria Tortona.

The Rossana Orlandi Gallery offers, in the cloisters of the National Museum of Science and Technology, recently restored thanks to the contribution of the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region, two different initiatives dedicated to the culture of design: "We are nature", an exhibition dedicated to responsible art and design where works are created in harmony with the coexistence between man and planet and with respect for nature; “RO plastic prize 2020”, the “International Award” dedicated to the themes of reuse and recycling of plastic and exhibition of the finalist projects.

Also unmissable is the presence of ADI which, in addition to having awarded the XXVI Compasso d'oro, the most famous Italian design award, on 9 September, will be present in Milan Design city with "Le vie del Compasso D'oro", an exhibition featuring stops in design studios, manufacturing companies, showrooms, schools, foundations and institutions in and around Milan that exhibit at least one of the products linked to the Compasso d'Oro from 1954 to today. With “Design helps heal” ADI in collaboration with AIRC Lombarda will reward the best young designers, called to design to improve the quality of equipment and services dedicated to those facing serious pathologies.

Milano Design city will also be a complex multi-channel communication campaign that will strengthen the link between the city and the world of design. Spots, billboards and social channels of the Administration will inform citizens about the contents and main events of the event. More information at www.yesmilano.it.
