Milan, March 24 2021 - There are six Third Sector bodies that will receive the 700 thousand euros from the new Food Aid Scheme of the Municipality of Milan, plus 260 thousand euros as part of the co-financing of the same. The contributions were granted for the development of food aid projects equally spread throughout Milan and on which 760 volunteers work: Nobody excluded by EMERGENCY, Solidando Help Milan by IBVA, Solidarity Packed by Fondazione Fratelli di San Francesco d'Assisi ONLUS, Bottega Popolare of the Molise-Calvairate-Ponti Social Housing Neighborhoods Committee, Solidarity Shops of Caritas Ambrosiana, Suspended Expenditure of Terre Des Hommes.

“This is one of the models of combating poverty on which we are aiming - declare the Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Food Policy Anna Scavuzzo and the Councilor for Social and Housing Policies Gabriele Rabaiotti -, that of collaboration between the Municipality and the realities of the Third sector, who in recent years have consolidated important skills in supporting material poverty and built networks and connections in neighborhoods".

The funds, for the months from March to December 2021, will strengthen already existing operational models - distribution of food parcels, food emporiums, solidarity shops and social canteen (with distribution of parcels) - in the city area, divided into 4 areas: North (Municipalities 1, 2 and 9), East (Municipalities 3 and 4), South (Municipalities 5 and 6) and West (Municipalities 7 and 8).

90% of the economic resources provided by the Municipality must be used for the purchase of foodstuffs to be distributed to households effectively domiciled in Milan - which are already in the care of the selected bodies or which are reported by the social services of the Municipality of Milan - and more exposed to the economic effects deriving from the Covid-19 epidemiological emergency, with priority for those who are not already recipients of public support.

To monitor the flow of food aid, the Municipality of Milan, thanks to the work of the Information Systems, has designed a database integrated with the Third Sector Entities.

The new Food Aid Device follows the one launched last March for 15 weeks, which made it possible in the midst of the Coronavirus emergency to distribute 45.100 food parcels (616 tons of food, 1.600.000 equivalent meals), reaching more than 6.300 families weekly (over 20.700 people).

The project then continued into the winter months with an innovative model created by the AVSI Foundation, the Municipality of Milan and the Italian Red Cross - Milan Committee, which involved the purchase and distribution of food parcels through the logistics hub of the Italian Red Cross in Segrate, with the involvement of 40 volunteers. In this case, the local associations were directly supplied (42 organisations), thanks to which 12 thousand people (4.500 families) were reached with 68 tonnes of food.
