Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. New Steering Committee elected

Sydney also joins the Pact: to date there are 216 signatory cities in the world

Milan, 18 April 2021 – The members of the 3rd Steering Committee of the MUFPP met for the first time this week, announced by Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan and president of the Steering Committee. The governing body of the Pact, which will remain in office for the next two years, has just been appointed following the most popular election ever: over 20 nominations received and more than 50% of the signatory cities voting.

The Committee is tasked with guiding the MUFPP in achieving its mission (transforming urban food systems by making them more sustainable and inclusive), providing strategic oversight. Furthermore, through the Milan Pact Awards (initiative of the Municipality of Milan and the Cariplo Foundation), the Steering Committee supports the signatory cities in their region, promoting the sharing of good practices, involving them in cooperation initiatives between cities, supporting at a regional and international level the role of cities in the transformation of the food system, organizing webinars and events to enrich the entire community of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact.

"Five years after the birth of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, which now brings together 216 cities around the world, we welcome the 12 cities elected to the Steering Committee - declares Deputy Mayor Anna Scavuzzo - who in the next two years will be at the forefront of promoting food policies sustainable. In recent months the pandemic has required an extraordinary effort from cities, and particular thanks go to the outgoing Committee for guaranteeing important support and the sharing of ideas and concrete projects: collaboration and alliance between cities improves policies public at the service of citizens".

Below are the new members of the Steering Committee chaired by the Mayor of Milan, for the years 2021-2023.
- Africa: Antananarivo (Madagascar) and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso);
- Asia-Pacific: Bandung (Indonesia) and Seoul (South Korea);
- Europe: Barcelona (Spain), Birmingham (UK) and Milan (Italy);
- Eurasia and south-western Asia: Kazan (Russian Federation) and Tel Aviv (Israel);
- North and Central America: Mérida (Mexico) and New Haven (United States);
- South America: Belo Horizonte (Brazil) and Rosario (Argentina).

Good food practices promoted by cities during Covid-19 are available on the channel YouTube of the Pact.

As part of actions to promote sustainable urban policies, the Municipality of Milan and the Italy ASEAN association promoted a webinar on 13 April with the cities of Bandung and Seoul (newly elected) and the European Commission with numerous Asian cities Pacific, interested in joining the Pact and contributing to the transformation of food systems. The shared commitment is to help achieve the SDGs, the sustainable development goals promoted by the UN, by 2030. During the webinar the city of Sydney (Australia) announced its entry into the Pact and the city of Wellington (New Zealand) will soon also join.
