Milan, 8 December 2019 – The installation of signs indicating the roads on which electric micromobility devices can or cannot move has been completed in recent days. So from tomorrow, Monday 9 December, electric scooters, Segways, hoverboards and single-wheelers will be able to circulate in Milan.

“This experiment is very important for us and we will monitor its progress with attention and interest – declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works –. Scooters and other micro electric vehicles, like bicycles, contribute to improving the quality of urban mobility but they must be used with great common sense. The streets belong to everyone and the pavements belong to pedestrians, which is why we have been clear in defining the areas where they can circulate in order to guarantee everyone's safety. Those who use them must do so with caution and attention for themselves and others because they are not toys."

With the installation of 130 signs along the outer belt of the city in Milan, the experimentation begins and will continue until July 2021 as foreseen by the guidelines of the Ministry of Transport last June. The circulation of micro electric mobility vehicles is permitted in pedestrian areas as long as the speed of the vehicle does not exceed 6 kilometers per hour (the decree requires the devices to be equipped with a speed limiter) and, but only for scooters and Segways, on tracks and cycle paths, cycle paths and in Zone 30 with a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour.

However, there are exceptions that concern some of these roads or portions of them, at the entrance of which 80 traffic ban signs have been placed. These are the sections with river stone paving, preferential lanes (also in Zone 30) adjacent to the tram tracks, unless they are in a separate roadway, in dead-end parking areas, in pedestrian tunnels.

It will be possible to use these devices also in cycle and pedestrian paths in green areas only after the approval by the City Council of a change to the green regulations.

Compliance with the rules is also very important with regard to the parking of scooters and other micro vehicles which is permitted in the stalls dedicated to bicycles or on the side of the road, where not expressly prohibited, never in conflict with the provisions of the highway code and always with common sense so that they do not constitute an obstacle or danger. There are over 4.300 bike parking stalls in the Cerchia dei Navigli alone, where there is no free parking, and over 32 thousand throughout the city, of which 6.900 are outside Municipality 1, located in the areas adjacent to the metro stops, and 3.350 are located along the cycle paths. Bike stalls are continuously growing due to new installations which also take into account the introduction of new vehicles.

We remember the importance for everyone to use approved vehicles, equipped with lights to be clearly visible and speed limiters and to always keep them in good efficient and safe conditions.

In recent days, three companies have also been selected that will be able to share micromobility in Milan, each will have a fleet of 750 scooters for a total of 2.250 devices present in the city and once the procedures with the administration have been completed they will be able to start provide the sharing service.
