Milan, October 10 2020 – The Monument in memory of the martyrs of the Foibe and the Istrian, Fiuman and Dalmatian exiles was inaugurated this morning in Piazza della Repubblica, in the presence of the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala, which intends to commemorate a tragedy recognized by the President of the Republic.

The sculpture was donated to the Municipality of Milan by the Pro-monument Committee, with the generous contribution of the Bracco Foundation, and was designed by the Istrian exile Piero Tatricchio.

The Administration actively contributed to the realization of the intervention by creating the base of the work, arranging for its transport from the laboratory and its placement in Piazza della Repubblica.

The structure is composed of two blocks of stone inserted one on top of the other, for a total height of 4 meters and depicts a man at the bottom of a foiba, a symbolic image of the suffering and martyrdom of thousands of victims of the tragic events that occurred between 1943 and 1954. The epigraph bears the writing "In perennial memory of the martyrs of the Foibe, of the missing without return and of the 350.000 exiles from Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia".
