M5. Extension in Monza, Ministry of Infrastructure signs the agreement

Milan, November 12 2019 - The Agreement for the disbursement of financing from the Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport for the construction of the extension of the M5 underground line from the Milanese Bignami station to Monza was signed. The realization of the extension is the result of co-financing in which the Lombardy Region also participates with 283 million euros, the Municipality of Milan with 37 million euros, the Municipality of Monza with 27,5 million euros, the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo with 13 million euros and Municipality of Sesto San Giovanni with 4,5 million euros.

A new stage is thus added to the process of realizing the extension of the Lille towards the capital of the Province of Monza and Brianza. Thanks to the funding already received in 2016, MM is working on the final project.

The total amount of the State contribution for the construction of the work is 900 million euros. Milan is the leader of the project for the construction of the work defined, in the same agreement just signed, as strategic for the territory of the entire Lombardy Region as it will allow the improvement and efficiency of the connection between Milan and Monza, the third largest city in Lombardy by population, creating, among other things, two important modal interchange nodes with the railway network and the metropolitan network. An extension that allows private transport to be limited throughout the basin, improving air quality and making the mobility of citizens and businesses easier.

“This is a fundamental infrastructure – declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works –. We are happy that everything is proceeding within the defined times and that there is total sharing on this project between the Government, the Lombardy Region, Monza, Cinisello Balsamo and Sesto San Giovanni. Our challenge is to develop public transport networks even outside the city limits and give citizens throughout the basin equal opportunities to no longer need to use private vehicles. We have just launched the tariff integration which establishes a single and fairer travel system also in the Monza Brianza area precisely to shorten distances. The extension of the Lille will transport on an average weekday around 210 thousand passengers who will be able to travel along a 25 kilometer route from the Stadio San Siro stop to Monza Brianza through four of the largest municipalities in Lombardy with certain times and a speed and convenience that no other paved road can never be guaranteed."

The project envisages an extension of 5 kilometers of underground route for the M13, today the line is 12,2 kilometers long, with 11 stations in addition to the 19 already existing for a total of 30 stations, and the connection with the M1 in Cinisello Monza to connect densely inhabited places, strategic from the point of view of entrepreneurship and of great attraction, and at the same time connect the Milanese metropolitan network directly to the interchange nodes with roads with major automobile traffic such as the A4, the Rho-Monza and the Milan-Lecco where an interchange car park will be built with 2.500 parking spaces to intercept private traffic. The commercial speed of the 32 trains measuring 50 meters will be 33 km/h. The M5 will operate 365 days a year, with hours from 5.30am to midnight and a frequency on weekdays of 24 minutes during rush hour and 3-4 minutes during off-peak hours.

In its development towards the north, the route follows in the first part the axis of viale Fulvio Testi with three stations: Testi-Gorky, Rondinella-Crocetta, Lincoln; it then continues towards the M1-M5 node of the Cinisello Monza station and then heads towards and crosses Monza-city along seven strategic stations: Campania, Marsala, Monza Fs (where the line will correspond with the local and long-distance railway services of the FS Como lines -Switzerland, Lecco and Bergamo), then the Trento Trieste, Parco Villa Reale, San Gerardo Hospital and the Monza Brianza institutional hub.
