M4. A weekend of celebration for the blue line with the opening of the first section

From Saturday at 12 until Sunday evening you can travel for free at the six stops - M4 inauguration - Short video extract on the opening of the M4 to the public

Milan, November 24 2022 – Next weekend Milan will be dyed blue to greet the birth of the M4: starting from 12pm on Saturday 30 November, when it opens to the public, you will be able to travel for free from Linate Airport to Dateo until the whole day on Sunday November 26.

Together with municipalities 3 and 4, a party was organized on Saturday along viale Argonne. The opening of M4, in fact, is an opportunity to return to towns and citizens the public spaces long affected by the metro construction sites, which the Municipality wanted to redevelop and enrich with new superficial arrangements for the benefit of the neighborhoods. The central parterre that runs along Viale Argonne to Piazzale Susa will be returned, completely renovated with play areas for children, fitness areas with exercise equipment, football pitches, basketball courts, bowls, volleyball and ping-pong tables. These new gardens will also be equipped with cycle paths, dog areas and will have ecological and draining paving.

Starting from 10 am on Saturday morning, Viale Argonne will be animated by sporting activities with instructors from amateur associations, followed by demonstration performances by young people in the various playgrounds present in the area. For the little ones, always from 10am until early afternoon, there will be puppet shows and theater workshops with storytellers, creative workshops, moments of juggling and entertainment with magic shows and face painting.

With the launch of the new M4 there will be two fully automated, driverless Milanese metros. The first section operational from Saturday 26 November is 5 km long and crosses the eastern districts of Milan also allowing interchange with the Passante railway stations in Dateo and Stazione Forlanini. At the end of the works, expected in 2024 (while by June 2023 it will travel to San Babila, in the heart of the city), M4 will be able to count on 21 stations and 15 km of extension, crossing the Cerchia dei navigli up to Lorenteggio, with a terminus in San Cristoforo.

The "blue" involves strong integration with other existing metro lines, the urban railway system, surface lines and the city airport. Milan will thus have a total metro network of 118 km. The fleet will be made up of 47 driverless trains and the line will be able to transport 24.000 passengers per hour, in each direction, with an estimated 86 million people in a year and a peak frequency of one train every 90 seconds. Each train will be able to carry up to 600 passengers.

NOTE TO THE PRESS – The inauguration in the presence of the authorities, workers of the companies is scheduled for Saturday 26 November, at 11 am, in Linate. The meeting for the press is set at 10 am at Milan – Linate airport, on the arrivals floor, door 15.
