M4. More greenery and new paving to increase the pedestrian appeal of the San Vittore area

The overall redevelopment project as part of the superficial improvements of the new Milan metro was presented in Municipality 1

Milan, January 30 2021 – The overall redevelopment project for the area adjacent to the M1 S. Ambrogio station was presented in Municipality 4 by Mobility Councilor Marco Granelli.

The scope of the works presented concerns square and via San Vittore and the surrounding streets, including via Carducci, via Olona, via Modestino and the National Museum of Science and Technology, connecting to the redevelopment of Piazza Sant'Agostino. The project as a whole has already been shared and approved by the Superintendency with whom we also worked to ensure accessibility. All works are carried out by the concessionary company M4 SpA and by the Municipality of Milan.

"The project plans to increase the greenery in the entire area by 5.700 square meters, also with the restoration of the row of trees in via San Vittore and in the square of the same name which houses the Science Museum, for a total of 200 trees - declares Marco Granelli Councilor for Mobility -. While also guaranteeing the mobility of motor vehicles, the significant widening of many sidewalks and the resurfacing of the pavements will accentuate the pedestrian and monumental vocation of these streets, enriching them with an important offer in terms of sustainable mobility and accessibility, starting with the new metro line, and enhancing the historical and artistic profile of the area. A perfect setting for the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, the Pusterla, the Catholic University and the War Memorial".

This is a series of interventions that integrate the project, already presented about a year ago, of the large staircase that characterizes the exit of the blue line near the Pusterla of the Ambrosian Basilica and connects to the square and the Catholic University.

In detail, for via San Vittore it is planned to maintain two-way traffic in the stretch from via De Togni to via degli Olivetani (guaranteeing access to the hospital for emergency vehicles coming from both the center and the outskirts). In this section the speed limit of 30 km/h will be inserted, the redevelopment of the pavements of the pavements will be carried out with the widening of the same, the restoration of public transport stops in both directions and the maintenance of the taxi stands on the side of the hospital.

The project also envisages an overall redevelopment of Piazza San Vittore with greater accessibility to the museum aimed at people with mobility difficulties and with a strong presence of trees, with essences that will not cover the historic facades of the buildings on the square. New flooring and the insertion of a pilamat are planned.

In the next stretch of via San Vittore, from via De Togni to via Carducci, a one-way traffic is planned with a reserved lane towards the suburbs with bike access, the restoration of the tree-lined row, a significant widening of the pavements which will thus be able to contain dehors, the redevelopment of their floors and a dedicated cycle path towards the centre.

Finally, as regards the stretch from via Carducci to via Lanzone of via San Vittore, the maintenance of two-way traffic is planned (speed limit 30 km/h) with the optimization of the lanes and the redevelopment and widening of the pavement in order to give space to the dehors.

The project also includes interventions on the via Carducci-via Olona axis. In addition to the overall redevelopment of the Pusterla area, closely connected to the new M4 metro exit project, the Municipality plans to create two cycle paths and widen the sidewalks in via Carducci.

In the section of intersection between via Carducci and via Olona an overall redevelopment is planned with a new pavement profile and relative widening (facilitated crossings and the closure of the separate turning lane).

The project for an overall redevelopment of via Olona is also being developed which will involve new trees, the widening of the sidewalks and the redevelopment of the cycle path in continuity with the route of via Solari.

On Via Olona it should be remembered that the project also includes the installation of the lift exit which facilitates access to the underground station at the connection between the M2 and the M4.

As regards parking, it is worth mentioning the presence of the Sant'Ambrogio underground car park with approximately 230 parking spaces and 55 rotating motorbikes with agreements for residents.
