Work. From Cilento to Milan, 1.000 km by bicycle against deaths at work

The #girolevitespezzate ends in Piazza Castello to raise awareness of businesses, administrations and citizens about safety in the workplace

Milan, May 17 2019 – It ended this morning with the arrival in Piazza Castello, on the corner of Via Beltrami, after 1.000 km like the thousand deaths that occur every year in the workplace, the long bicycle journey of a worker, a trade unionist and a safety professional which covered the entire country to raise awareness among companies, institutions and the population of ever greater attention to safety in the workplace and to the fight against accidental deaths.

The representatives of the municipal administration together with Paolo Pirani, UILTEC General Secretary and Carmelo Barbagallo, UIL General Secretary, welcomed the unusual cyclist, with his wealth of values ​​and attention towards those killed at work.

The "I turn around broken lives” is a symbolic solo bicycle race which, starting from the municipality of Ogliastro Cilento last April 27th, ended today in Milan, traveled across the entire peninsula, stopping in places where fatal accidents occurred last year which involved workers. An opportunity to meet with the communities, families, colleagues and friends of the victims in order not to forget the broken lives but above all an opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of safety and health in places of work thanks to meetings, conferences and events organized by UILTEC at the end of each stage.

In Lombardy, INAIL recorded a total number of accident reports in 2018 of 119.937 compared to 117.757 in 2017, with an increase of 1,9%, while the figure relating to the province of Milan was 40.457 reports in 2018 compared to 39.493 in 2017, with an increase of 2,44%. As regards complaints for professional diseases, the figure in Lombardy went from 3.899 cases in 2017 to 4.115 in 2018 with an increase of 5,5%, while in the province of Milan there were 529 complaints recorded in 2018 compared to 526 in 2017 with an increase by 0,6%. Finally, as regards workplace deaths, in Lombardy, 2018 fatal accidents were recorded in 163, compared to 139 deaths in 2017, of which 49 in the city of Milan alone (41 in 2017). The most significant element linked to workplace deaths in the Province of Milan concerns women, which went from 10 in 2017 to 20 in 2018, with a percentage increase of 100% while the increase relating to males is 10,85%.
