Road works. Via Melchiorre Gioia, the construction site opens from 15 June

The manhole section of the Martesana will be consolidated and rehabilitated

Milan, June 14 2020 - From tomorrow, Monday 15 June, the construction site will open for the consolidation of the slab on the manhole section of the Naviglio Martesana in the road section between via Galvani and via Pirelli and in the intersections with via Galvani, via Pirelli and via della Liberazione. The work will be carried out by MM.

The manhole cover of the Naviglio Martesana, in the section affected by the construction site, has a roofing system made up of reinforced concrete beams, with cores descending from the reinforced concrete slab which will be renovated and reinforced, and the manhole covers will also be replaced. The intervention for Milan is important and significant because it is part of the plan implemented in recent years with the aim of redeveloping and maintaining the entire route of the Seveso waters under the city.

"We are interested in strengthening and consolidating the Milanese water system which, with the frequent, increasingly torrential rains and the consequent flooding, is put under pressure in particular by the Seveso river - declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works -. In recent years we have intervened in some sections of the route from via Valfurva to the intersection between via Chiarissimi and Melchiorre Gioia. A maintenance and consolidation project on the Redefossi cable which receives the waters of the Seveso from the Bastioni of Porta Nuova to Rogoredo began last summer. construction is underway on the stretch between Piazza Cinque Giornate and Piazza Medaglie d'Oro and this summer, again on the Redefossi, work will begin on the stretch between Piazza Oberdan and Piazza Cinque Giornate. Milan wants to strengthen its water system and give citizens more safety with important interventions and investments".

The construction activities will be divided into two phases: the first, shorter one, from next Monday to Sunday 12 July, will last 35 days and will involve the traffic light intersection of via Melchiorre Gioia/via Galvani (towards the city centre) and via Melchiorre Gioia/via Pirelli (towards the suburbs) and the stretch of via Melchiorre Gioia from via Galvani to via Pirelli/via Sassetti. To allow safe access to the hatches and manhole covers of the Martesana manhole, it is necessary to modify the road system: the construction site will in fact have to occupy the central carriageway of via Melchiorre Gioia (even civic side - towards the suburbs). In this phase, some road modifications will be carried out which will allow the regular flow of traffic on temporary road lanes in the next construction phase.

The second phase is instead dedicated to the reinforcement works on the manhole covers which will be carried out below street level, inside the watercourse, at the intersections of via Melchiorre Gioia with via Galvani, with via Pirelli and with via della Liberazione. the duration of 400 days.

During all construction phases, pedestrian crossing of via Melchiorre Gioia in front of the Palazzo della Regione Lombardia, in correspondence with via Cardano, will be guaranteed. The regular service of ATM line 43 will also be guaranteed in both directions (Piazza Firenze and Piazza Greco).

The side streets and sidewalks in both directions, the pedestrian accesses and driveways for the entrance to the residences and commercial activities present in the section of Via Melchiorre Gioia affected by the construction site are not affected by the construction site in via Melchiorre Gioia.
