Public Works. Monte Rosa cycle path, Municipality takes charge of the works

The contract with the non-compliant company has been resolved and today the handover of the construction site has taken place

Milan, January 13 2020 - In recent days, the contract with the company that had been awarded the contract for the construction of the Amendola-Fiera cycle path which passes through Via Monte Rosa was terminated. During the month of February the work on the first lot will resume to be completed by a company from the municipal contract for extraordinary road maintenance.

The handover will take place on Monday 13 January: the area will be taken over by the Municipality for safety and cleaning with the restoration of pedestrian paths, construction site signs and correct barricading.

In recent weeks the Municipality had unsuccessfully attempted an agreement and a transaction with Viabit, the company that had taken over from a previous company which had itself defaulted. Initially, work resumed efficiently and, from January to May 2019, the construction site progressed within the defined timescales. Subsequently, the company slowed down its activity until it stopped completely, before abandoning the construction site and taking legal action against the Municipality. What followed was an attempt at a settlement agreement by the Administration to try to continue the work without further interruptions and delays, but the opportunity was not seized by the company which did not show up at the decisive and previously agreed meetings. Until last December 20th when the Municipality formally sent the termination of the contract and the request to return the construction site within a maximum of 30 days as required by law. The Municipality has called the company today to definitively take over the areas and start making the construction site safe through ordinary maintenance contracts.

“It is sad to see how the Municipality finds itself in difficulty with companies that are unable to respect the commitments undertaken and carry out the works according to the project and contractual times – declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works -. Now the company will have to deal with the municipal attorney's office, while I have asked the technical offices to have the work carried out as quickly and as best as possible, to give citizens the cycle path and sidewalks in the best conditions as soon as possible. This is our goal. The Milanese have had to wait and endure the inconveniences of the construction site for too long already."
