Galimberti: “One of the actions of the Municipality of Milan to reduce the white flight phenomenon”

Milan, October 6 2019 – The experimentation of new criteria for access to pre-school services and evening games starts with six primary schools, born from the idea of strengthening and making the schools of individual neighborhoods more attractive with the aim of reducing segregation phenomena, bringing back the families to choose the local school for its teaching and the services it offers.

“We wanted to start this experiment to try to get children back to attend schools in their neighborhood – comments Education Councilor Laura Galimberti – and thus reduce the so-called white flight. In addition to the percentages of children of foreign origin, in fact, families are sometimes held back in choosing a school by the lack of before and after school services which, according to current criteria, can only be activated with more than ten students enrolled and for those He has both working parents. This is one of the actions that the Municipality can implement to reduce these phenomena."

The first six schools to test the new criteria were selected by cross-referencing data on the percentage of minors of foreign origin (above 30%), on the segregation index (above 10%) and on the difficulty of reaching the minimum number of a few unit: specifically the schools will be Cesare Battisti, Graf, Damiano Chiesa, Valdagno, Visconti and Vittorio Bachelet. The experimentation therefore allows access to services even with just five requests, instead of ten, and the acceptance of applications even in the presence of only one working parent.

Throughout the city there are 139 schools, for over 10.000 students, which have activated pre-school services (from 7.30 to 8.30) and evening games (from 16.30 to 18) for the current school year. During these extra-curricular hours, educational and entertainment activities are carried out, with particular attention to the sporting, linguistic, musical and artistic fields.
