Young. The mural in via Sammartini 122 has been inaugurated, born from the “Leaving the sign\2” project

Milan, June 7 2019 – The project of the Municipality of Milan “Leaving the sign\122” concludes with the public presentation of a large mural in via Sammartini 2, which promoted intercultural dialogue and an anti-racist culture among young people, increasing knowledge on the phenomenon of migration and the right to asylum and promoting the emergence of young artists interested in tackling the issues of combating racism and discrimination through street art.

The project, which started last autumn, made it possible to activate school workshops, which involved a group of students from the artistic Brera and the scientific Volta, coordinated by an intercultural operator and a mediator. In parallel, an artistic residency lasting 10 days was held, in which 4 artists selected by the Municipality of Milan, through an international call, participated: Riccardo Buonafede, Simone Carraro (r_a_c_h_i_t_i_c_o), Giulia Salamone and Alexandros Simopoulos.

The students and artists, coordinated by the cartoonist Federico Manzone, participated in theoretical and practical sessions on the themes of the project, aimed at preparing sketches for the creation of the mural. There were also various moments of meeting, discussion and dialogue, in particular with the guests of the SPRAR in via Stella. Students and artists worked together on the creation of the mural - the last phase of the project.

The “Leaving the sign\2” project was created by the Youth Area of the Municipality of Milan in collaboration with BJCEM - Biennale des jeunes créateurs de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée (an international association that has been promoting and enhancing the intercultural dialogue and contemporary artistic research in different expressive languages) and Africa and the Mediterranean (social promotion association of Bologna, founded with the aim of promoting cultural cooperation between Europe and Africa and encouraging intercultural dialogue).
