Furthermore, on the occasion of the anniversary, the Municipality of Milan will make public the geomap of the Jewish population registered in Milan in 1938, based on the documentation contained in the Israelite Fund preserved at the Citadel of Archives. The map will be available at this point link starting from 8.30 tomorrow morning until 8.30 on Friday 28th.
The Jewish census was carried out by the Municipality starting from August 1938 in view of the enactment of the fascist racial laws. With a telegram dated 11 August, the Prefecture ordered the identification of "Jewish" citizens, Italians and foreigners, resident and/or present in the Milanese territory from that date.
On the eve of the census, depending on the sources, there were an estimated 6.200 residents according to data from the Union of Italian Jewish Communities and over 10 thousand Jewish residents according to the Ministry of the Interior.
10.591 names were registered: on the geomap it is possible to search by name and address, with a short biographical card placed next to each address. The names without certain information are automatically placed in the center of the city, in Piazza Duomo.
