World Blood Donor Day. Appeal from the Municipality to raise citizens' awareness

Milan, June 14 2019 – On the occasion of World Donor Day established byWorld Health Organization, the Municipality of Milan issues an invitation aimed at raising citizens' awareness of blood donation.

“Donating blood is a gesture that costs nothing, but can save a life. This is why – says the councilor for Social Policies, Health and Rights Pierfrancesco Majorino - we appeal to all the Milanese, who last year proved to be truly sensitive and generous, to make a further effort and go and donate, especially in view of the summer, the period in which the blood shortage is most felt" .

From the beginning of the year until May 31, 36.078 units of blood were donated, equal to approximately 16 thousand litres. This is 933 bags less than the same period last year, a decrease of 2,52%. Even today in Milan, 30 thousand units are missing to satisfy the transfusion needs of all its hospitals.

Donations have been declining for several years now, so there is a need to increase the number of donors to maintain the donation level.
