Milan, November 4 2021 – The symbolic conferral of honorary citizenship to the Unknown Soldier took place this morning during the flag-raising ceremony in Piazza Duomo, presided over by the prefect of Milan Renato Saccone, signed today by the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala after the unanimous approval of the city council in the session of 21 June.

In the presence of the armed units of the Military Garrison of Milan, deployed on the occasion of the celebrations of the Day of the Armed Forces, the motivation was read: The honors to the unknown soldier are the recognition of the value of the many citizens who have fulfilled their duty in the towards the state. Decorated with a Gold Medal for military valour, he represents the equality of the sacrifice made by all those who lost their lives in combat, regardless of the rank held, the heroic actions carried out or the anguish felt in the trenches, the personal and social conditions from. All Italians recognize the loved one that everyone lost during the 1915-1918 war in that body sought among the remains of the fallen without distinction of wealth or class and among the most advanced points along which the Italian forces had arrived to fight, where the courage had been highest, chosen from among those most tortured and who had suffered the most. There are several countries today united by a spirit of friendship and united by collaboration and international cooperation that share the honors of an unknown soldier. With honorary citizenship, granted on the occasion of the centenary of his burial at the Altare della Patria in Rome, Milan seals the value of the sacrifice of the Unknown Soldier and testifies to the gratitude of the Milanese towards him, perpetuating the memory of all those who, in every time and in every place, they lost their lives for having fulfilled their duty towards Italy, for having remained faithful to the values ​​of justice and social solidarity to defend the homeland, for having defended others and served their community.

The celebrations promoted by the Citizen Committee for November 4th, composed of the Prefect of Milan and the Mayor of Milan together with the territorial military authorities, will end on Saturday November 6th, at 11 am at the Loggia dei Mercanti, with the concert of the Fanfare of the 1st Region aerial, open to citizens.
