Food policy. The free exhibition on Milan's food policy has opened at the Centrale dell'acqua

Open until 9 July, it recounts five years of activity through maps, videos and infographics, divided into five thematic areas

Milan, June 10 2021 - The exhibition "Food Policy 2030. A healthy, sustainable and inclusive food system" was inaugurated this morning at the Centrale dell'Acqua in Milan, which recounts five years of activity - with numbers, maps, videos and infographics - to make sustainable and the city's food system is inclusive.

“Working on the city's Food Policy in these first five years has allowed us to undertake many paths with competent and passionate public and private entities - commented the Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Food Policy Anna Scavuzzo -, with whom we have shared strategies and projects and who , over the last year, have allowed us to give a rapid and effective response to new needs that have emerged in emergencies. This exhibition closes a first cycle of Milan's Food Policy, which has led us to be one of the most virtuous cities on food policies also at an international level, and opens a new path for an increasingly sustainable future".

Between 2015 and 2020, the actions and projects carried out were numerous and the impacts generated involved all citizens, starting with the children of the Milanese schools, thanks to the work on the menus with Milano Ristorazione, up to the families most in difficulty with food aid actions and surplus redistribution systems. The Milan Food Policy has also worked to increasingly involve the territory towards greater attention to the development of short supply chains, to promote innovative waste reduction practices and for the management of surpluses and waste.

Some examples of the work of these first five years are the 20% reduction of CO2 equivalent emissions in school menus, the opening of two neighborhood hubs against food waste, which will soon become four (Isola, Lambrate, Corvetto and Gallaratese ) and the reaching, during the first lockdown, of 21 people through the Food Aid Device.

“We are proud to have contributed to the implementation of the Milan Food Policy right from the start, giving concreteness and substance to a central theme for the future of cities – said Carlo Mango, Director of the Scientific and Research Area of the Cariplo Foundation -. We believe that education in healthy and sustainable eating is essential for the well-being of people and the environment, for health and for learning the value of food. The younger generations will be the protagonists of the changes that our society needs. Involving the little ones and also their families in an activity that looks to the future with a view to the circular economy and sustainability of the food system is an important part of this process and for this reason we are satisfied with initiatives such as the one of the exhibition held today that links together sociality, art and education”.

The exhibition, open until 9 July free of charge (from Monday to Friday, from 10am to 13pm and from 14pm to 19.30pm), is divided into five thematic areas with a route that will also continue online on the foodpolicymilano.org website so that it can also be used outside the city of Milan.

The exhibition is hosted by the Centrale dell'Acqua di MM, manager of the integrated water service in Milan, a place dedicated to the promotion of scientific culture on water - accessible, good and controlled -, an irreplaceable element at the basis of every food system.

“The Food Policy exhibition is an important stage that illustrates what is being implemented in Milan regarding the topic of the food system and the fight against food waste - declared the President of MM Simone Dragone -. It is a privilege to be able to host the exhibition in one of the symbolic places of common goods, the Central Water Centre, whose objective is to create culture around sustainability, inclusion and combating the dispersion of resources".

“MM is the public engineering company of the Municipality of Milan which designs and builds numerous material infrastructures in the city - concluded the General Director of MM Stefano Cetti -. And lately it also has another objective, equally important: to create intangible infrastructures. The Water Center has become a place in the city where important issues are discussed: common goods, environmental transition, climate change, obviously public water. Now the power, with this exhibition. In the daily care of the city there is also this additional cultural and advocacy dimension.”

Promoted by the Municipality of Milan and the Cariplo Foundation, "Food Policy 2030. A healthy, sustainable and inclusive food system" was created in collaboration with MM Spa, with the support of Foody, Sogemi and Milano Ristorazione.
