Milan, November 2 2022 – The ceremony for the unveiling of the plaque with the names of the meritorious took place this morning at the Famedio of the Monumental Cemetery.

The speech of the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala

Dear and dear fellow citizens,
it is always an emotion to participate in this ceremony. For me it is an emotion to represent my city in this place dedicated to the citizens who have made the history of Milan and the country.
Today the Famedio is enriched with 14 new names: women and men who have left an indelible mark on the life of the community, bringing a unique, original and unrepeatable contribution.
The life and works of each of them will be briefly remembered, one by one, by the President of the City Council, Elena Buscemi.
The passionate debate and the involvement of civil society in the choice of personalities to enroll in the Famedio are an eloquent demonstration of the importance that these figures have had in the life of Milan. At the same time, they are a testimony to the value that every Milanese attributes to this place and what it represents.
Each of these great Milanese - Milanese by birth or by choice - worked, acted, created something new in different fields: from civil commitment to art, from economics to culture. All together they represent, almost symbolically, the variety, diversity and richness of our city.
The names of some are known to all, others enjoy undisputed fame in the field in which they have applied themselves. However, they are all an integral part of our history: each of them is an expression of different traditions, cultures and experiences, but they all represent Milan at its best, and "the best" of Milan.
This day, this act of memory and recognition of the greatness of Milan and some of its best sons, therefore represents an injection of confidence, energy and hope from which we must draw inspiration.
From the women and men remembered in the Famedio comes a lesson that today, in a difficult historical phase for the city, for the country, for the entire world, is more valid than ever.
The best way to give substance to this message of hope is to follow their example: remember them by remaining united even if different, realizing the needs of others, making room for the dreams, desires, hopes for peace and justice that we all have in heart, each with its own history, its own specificity, its own sensitivity.
After all, Milan - we know - is a unique city precisely because of its ability to be free, welcoming and open to diversity. For his ability to look at the substance, to look at the merit of each one.
Milan is great because it knows how to offer everyone, without distinction, the opportunity to realize themselves and create something beautiful, useful, good for themselves and for the community as a whole.
This ability to welcome and give value to the Person, for who he is and for what he can do, is a virtue of which all of us Milanese must be proud. It is a virtue that we must cultivate and teach to our children, so that it remains a distinctive feature of our city forever. So that it may forever be the driving force that makes us progress together, as individuals and as a community. Thank you.

The speech by the President of the City Council, Elena Buscemi

Mr Mayor, Mr Prefect, dear family members,
Every year on November 2, Milan rediscovers itself, its roots, the ideal and value foundations that make our city an economic, social and cultural point of reference for Italy and the rest of Europe. This rediscovery of our abilities soothes the pain for the 14 personalities that today we celebrate for eternity with the inscription to the Famedio, and encourages us in facing the trials of the present and the future.
In the last two and a half years, Milan, like the rest of the world, is going through a new phase, full of unexpected difficulties that we mistakenly thought had been erased from history. Today we are here to say our thanks to each and every one of them. We need to take an example from their lives in order to continue the transformation of Milan in the name of progress and innovation despite the demanding challenges we are facing, and to contribute to making our city and our country increasingly free and fair.
