Blood donors. Today is World Day, the Municipality's appeal to raise citizens' awareness

Milan, June 14 2020 – On the occasion of World Donor Day established by the World Health Organization, the Municipality of Milan issues an invitation aimed at raising citizens' awareness of blood donation.

“We take this opportunity – intervenes the councilor for social and housing policies Gabriele Rabaiotti – to thank the historical donors, but also to send a message to those who have never donated blood: it is a simple gesture that has immense value. In these months of emergency we have met the gaze of sick and struggling people. Our blood for them can become hope. This too is the task of the cities and of our Milan."

From the beginning of the year until May 31, 30.787 units of blood were donated, equal to almost 14 thousand litres. This is 5.215 bags less than the same period last year, a drop of almost 15% mainly attributable to the health emergency due to the spread of the Coronavirus. But blood donations have been decreasing for some time now: last year, for example, there was a decrease of 2,5% compared to 2018.
To meet the transfusion needs of all Milanese hospitals, the number of blood units available would have to more than double. There is therefore an extreme need to increase the number of donors.
