Rights. A protocol with the Ministry of Justice for volunteer projects for prisoners

They will be involved in the maintenance and protection of public green areas, starting with the Porto di Mare Park in Rogoredo

Milan, June 30 2021 – Involve prisoners who request it in activities to protect and enhance public heritage, greenery in particular, as an opportunity for social reintegration, training and re-education opportunities, also with a view to approaching the world of work.

These are the purposes of the Memorandum of Understanding that will be stipulated shortly between the Municipality of Milan and the Ministry of Justice - Department of Penitentiary Administration - and of which the Administration has approved the guidelines.

A path in line with the re-educational purposes of the sentence enshrined in the Constitution, also aimed at reducing the risk of recidivism for detained persons by allowing, in synergy with the judiciary and local authorities, the identification of broader rehabilitation and reintegration projects social.

We will start with the direct involvement of 20 prisoners per year (the Protocol will last three years) in the activities of voluntary and third sector associations that already operate in the areas identified to strengthen ordinary and extraordinary management interventions of public green areas, starting from the Porto di Mare park, in the Rogoredo and Santa Giulia neighbourhood. Before starting work, the volunteers will be included in a training and orientation course aimed at developing the skills necessary to be able to carry out the role of greenery operator, through a theoretical training part and a subsequent internship.

The involvement of volunteers for the protection of the Porto di Mare park has so far achieved appreciable results in the recovery of large areas, which are now fully accessible to citizens in a safe manner. Over time, a very virtuous collaborative relationship has been consolidated between the Municipality and various associations particularly active in the care of greenery and in urban regeneration contexts (such as the CFU - Urban reforestation center of Italia Nostra and Associazione Giacche verdi), which contribute effectively organize and promote social cohesion, volunteering and civic education activities.
