Rabaiotti: “Collaboration generates new solutions: even in this way we can imagine the exit from the hardest phase of the pandemic”

Milan, June 30 2020 - Milan Check Point moves house. From tomorrow, July 19st, the space dedicated to the sexual health of citizens, where they can go to get an HIV test or undertake a PrEP course, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, will move from the Casa dei Diritti in via De Amicis to the headquarters in Emergency in via Santa Croce XNUMX.

“In these days - intervenes the councilor for social and housing policies Gabriele Rabaiotti - at the moment in which we are reorganizing our way of living in the city, moving, working, meeting, alongside the difficulties, new models and new opportunities for discussion are also emerging . The Check Point of Milan, which operates in the nightlife areas and which has carried out valuable work in prevention and attention to the health of young people, met with Emergency and, thanks to its availability, will be able to avoid prolonging the interruption of the service beyond due. It is not only a gesture of generosity, although important, but also the concrete sign of how, in collaboration, unexpected solutions can be found and generate new possibilities for the future, opening paths that we had not thought of until now. This is also a way of imagining the exit from the hardest and most painful phase of the pandemic."

The Check Point was opened in February 2019 by the will of the associations ANLAIDS Lombardy Section, ASA Milano Onlus, CIG - Arcigay Milano Onlus, LILA Milano Onlus Foundation and Nps Italia Onlus, and also thanks to the support of the Municipality of Milan, Simit Lombardia and by Fast Track Cities - Milan stops AIDS.

During the first year of activity it became a point of reference for the whole city: 1500 tests for HIV and syphilis were carried out, 180 users were followed for PrEP. But at this moment, after the forced closure due to the health emergency, it would have been impossible to reopen the spaces at the House of Rights in compliance with the regulations regarding the containment of infections, to protect users and operators. Hence, thanks to the intermediation of the Municipality, the need for the move.

“We are happy to be able to welcome such an innovative experience for Milan - says Pietro Parrino, director of Emergency's Field Operations Department - so as to be able to guarantee continuity to their work even while waiting for the reopening of their usual headquarters. Despite such a complicated moment, the fight to combat the spread of the HIV and AIDS virus must remain one of the public health priorities.”

“I can only thank councilor Rabaiotti and the management of Emergency - concludes Massimo Cernuschi, president of Milan Check Point - for the rapid support they gave us to resume our activities. I also thank the volunteers who allow us to carry out an important service in the fight against HIV and stigma. In difficult moments you can see who really wants to fight."
