Rights. TO Palazzo Marino the banner against human trafficking

Milan, October 16 2020 – From today until Monday 19 October, on the occasion of the fourteenth European Day against Trafficking in Human Beings, at Palazzo Marino the banner "Milan does not traffic" will be displayed to raise citizens' awareness of the challenge represented by the fight against trafficking and the exploitation of people.

The Municipality of Milan has been engaged for over twenty years in actions to combat this phenomenon and in the protection of victims through participation in projects financed by the Department for Equal Opportunities of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and co-financed by the municipal administration.

Currently, the “Derive e arrodi” project welcomes 146 people (of which 129 women, 13 men and 4 transgenders) and offers assistance with mobile units that intercept and offer help to those who are victims of prostitution exploitation or are forced to beg on the street (in total around 5.500 contacts were reached) and with local branches which welcomed around 300 people.

The exhibition "Ri-scatti. For the mercenary streets of sex" is open to the public until October 25th at the PAC Pavilion of Contemporary Art. Eighty photographs that tell a burning, uncomfortable and at times chilling reality: that of the condition of slavery in which in 2020 victims of trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation still find themselves in the metropolitan area of Greater Milan. The result is an unprecedented story in images created by 7 prostitutes from the Milanese hinterland who, after having attended a photography workshop led by Visualcrew photographers for three months, were free to tell their story by taking photographs themselves representative of their reality, made yes of the street, but also of daily life. The photographs, in addition to denouncing a little-known reality, are also the tool for raising funds to support the activities of Lule Onlus, a secular association founded in 1998 in Abbiategrasso, which, with 20 professional operators and 35 volunteers, has been offering help to victims of human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation with intervention programs aimed at their assistance, integration and social recovery. On the territory of the metropolitan city of Milan, the Lule Association intervenes as a partner of the anti-trafficking project "Drives and landings" of which the Municipality of Milan is the leader.
