Design. Milan returns as the undisputed protagonist of design culture with supersalone

Over 70 protagonists responded to the Municipality's appeal to animate the special edition of the Salone del Mobile 2021

Milan, 1 September 2021 – After the 17 months of stoppage imposed by the Covid emergency, Milan returns to being a point of reference for international design thanks to Milano Design Week and “Supersalone”, the special edition of the Salone del Mobile scheduled from 5 to 10 September. 75 subjects responded enthusiastically to the Municipality's appeal, launched last May, to animate this particular edition of Milan Design Week including: Interni, Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, Rossana Orlandi, SuperStudio Group, Elle Decor, Vanity Fair, as well as the design districts of via Durini, Brera, 5Vie and numerous design brands. A kaleidoscope of events, ideas and projects that will involve the entire city, from the historic courtyards of the State University, to the iconic spaces of Brera, Lambrate, Isola etc.

In this edition the courtyards and cloisters of the University of Milan return to being the iconic location of the event with the Interni Creative Connections exhibition event, almost 30 installations and exhibitions curated by the most illustrious names in Italian and international design, designed to celebrate the 30 years of FuoriSalone, born in 1990. At the Brera Botanical Garden, again thanks to Interni, Natural Capital, an installation by Carlo Ratti for Eni on the symbiotic relationship between plants and the environment, oxygen production and Co2 consumption . Finally, in via della Spiga 26, the Audi City Lab will host Enlightening the future, the project by Marcel Wanders studio, until 27 September, an immersive experience based on light as a tool for connecting and narrating innovation projects linked to mobility.
The streets of Brera and beyond will host "Forms of Living" curated by StudioLabo, a moment of discussion and debate on the renewed housing needs and domestic spaces, a direct consequence of the pandemic. Over 90 events spread across the district, 130 exhibitors and 140 shows -room with 15 new openings in 2021 confirming the unique soul of the district, the event has exhibitions, installations and talks at its centre.

The protagonists of the event will also be the design districts such as the area between via Cesare Correnti, piazza Mentana, via Santa Marta and via San Maurilio which, thanks to the 5Vie Association, offers events and initiatives, exhibitions and installations with guests and partners, meetings, talks and performances. Appointments that will run on the double track of physical and digital.

Among the districts, the Durini Design District could not be missing, which with its numerous showrooms offers meetings with architects and designers to illustrate the new trends in lifestyle and furnishings.

The inevitable protagonist will also be the area of ​​via Tortona which with Superstudio presents Superdesign Show 2021, returning forcefully to the forefront of the international scene with Cult&Must, Donne&Design, Supercampus, Materials, Discovering, Outdoor Generation, 1000 Vases, the car of the future, the intelligent home , the challenges of art. A series of curatorial exhibitions, a museum vision, an eye towards tomorrow. A true R/EVOLUTION that continues with the inauguration of the Flavio Lucchini Museum, in via Tortona 27, and of Superstudio Maxi, in via Moncucco 35, the group's new and third space with DESIGN BEYOND DESIGN, five days of inauguration in the new center Superstudio Maxi exhibition with multidisciplinary activities - photographic exhibitions, design, talks, videos, performances and charity sales of love objects.

The Leonardo Da Vinci science and technology museum will host the third edition of RoGUILTLESSPLASTIC, the international project by Rossana Orlandi, with the TrashFormation Village, the Hall of Waste and the re-Food Market, installations dedicated to the theme of re-Waste to stimulate a new culture attentive to sustainability, responsibility and capable of generating emotions.

Palazzo Bovara, thanks to the collaboration with Elle Decor, will host for the occasion "La Casa Fluida", the concept that investigates the evolution of living from an eminently residential function to that of persistent dynamism. A journey through 11 environments, including outdoors, whose visit is an immersive experience. Comfort, flexibility of spaces and functions, natural approach to technological interfaces, sustainability: in addition to design and architecture, these are the key words of the project.

The spaces of the GAM in via Palestro will host "Metamorphosis", the exhibition curated by Alba Cappellieri on the evolution of the Bulgari maison, told through the symbol of the snake, emblem of metamorphosis and regeneration in all cultures and icon of the Roman maison from the 4s to Today. Thanks to the works of XNUMX international artists: Ann Veronica Janssens, Azuma Makoto, Daan Roosegaarde, Vincent Van Duysen, who interpreted the theme through their artistic languages ​​in specially designed installations.

The main courtyard of Palazzo Litta will be transformed for the entire week thanks to Mosca Partners and the reinterpretation by the Aires Mateus studio (Lisbon) into "A beach in the Baroque", starting with the public a reflection between art and design that accompanies the restart of the country in the name of meeting, inclusion and sociability.

The Isola neighborhood will also be a protagonist in this long week, returning to take on the role of Isola Design District with a circuit of meetings, talks and exhibitions that investigate the new design trends between innovation and sustainability. The collaboration with Campari four installations will be inspired by the iconic red bottle.

The Art Nouveau architecture of the civic aquarium will host the Ethical Metting Grandesign organized by the Plana Cultural Association. A schedule of meetings and installations dedicated to the importance of the role of Design in the near future, examining the changes imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and aimed at bringing attention back to the dimension of Ethics in design and planning. The spaces of the Palazzina Liberty in Largo Marinai d'Italia will be the backdrop to the talk "Living between architecture and anthropology: the vertical and horizontal dynamics of the city" organized by the Porta Romana Area District to analyze and open a reflection on the issues of vertical and horizontal architecture of Milan, also placing emphasis on the anthropological aspect and therefore on the truest sense of the concept of design as planning, thanks to the contribution of the architect Gianni Biondillo. 
Also in Porta Romana, exactly in via Friuli 10, Mamma Mia will take shape, the installation created ad hoc by Stefano Rossetti for Coldiretti in which the public space is redesigned through an installation that makes the Campagna Amica Market even more recognizable and unique. Thanks to the use of natural materials for the facade works, right from the entrance to the market the public will be accompanied by one of the founding thoughts of sustainability: attention to waste and recycling of the resources that the planet offers.

Finally, the exhibition “Sono Tazza di te! 100 smashing Women designers" curated by Anty Pansera and Patrizia Sacchi in which 80 women, artists and masters in the use of the most diverse materials, redesigned the most classic of everyday objects, the cup, making it become a real object of desire.

This September edition of Design Week is also a detailed multi-channel communication campaign entitled "Design is Milan is Design" which strengthens the link between the city and the world of design.
