Culture. The Council approves the contents of the strategic plan "1 City, 20 Museums, 4 Districts"

Milan, January 2 2021 – The Council approved the contents of the strategic plan “1 City, 20 Museums, 4 Districts”, giving a mandate to the Culture Directorate to continue with the organizational and economic feasibility study of the project for the creation of urban museum districts, aimed at the birth of a new cultural management of the city.

The project involves a process of reorganization of civic museums which aims to create four museum districts, located in as many areas of the city, characterized by a high concentration of museum and cultural institutions.
In particular, four areas are identified based on the criterion of geographical proximity in which to insert 23 civic museums: Sempione (Sforzesco Castle, Archaeological Museum, Civic Aquarium), Duomo (Royal Palace, Museum of the Twentieth Century, Museum of the Risorgimento, Palazzo Morando, Palazzo della Ragione, Studio museo Messina), Gardens (GAM, PAC, Natural History Museum, Planetarium, Boschi-Di Stefano House Museum, Palazzo Dugnani), Ansaldo (Mudec). The special projects CASVA, Art in Public Spaces, House of Memory, Networks and Cultural Cooperation also belong to the Ansaldo area.

The objective of the plan is twofold: on the one hand it aims to make the civic museum system more efficient towards the outside world thanks to a city cultural offer also integrated with the non-civic cultural institutes present in the districts; on the other hand it implies an internal organizational reorganization of the managements, in order to guarantee better execution of internal processes and therefore greater quality of the services provided. Furthermore, the integrated management of cultural policies will be able to connect more effectively to the urban, economic and social development strategies of the respective territories, becoming the engine of harmonious growth for each territorial area.

The research was co-financed by the Cariplo Foundation and was carried out by the Culture Directorate of the Municipality of Milan together with the Fondazione Scuola dei Beni e delle Scienze Culturali and the ASK – Bocconi Research Group. The research for the drafting of the Plan was carried out by PTSCLAS.
