Culture. From Friday 9th the church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore in Corso Magenta will reopen to the public

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 30, thanks to the volunteer members of the Italian Touring Club, it can be visited with entrance from the Archaeological Museum

Milan, October 7 2020 – From Friday 9 October the Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore reopens, a jewel of the city's artistic heritage which can be visited since 2006 thanks to the hospitality of the volunteer members of the Italian Touring Club, in collaboration with the Parish of Santa Maria alla Porta and the Municipality of Milan - Culture Directorate.

The church can be visited by entering the Civic Archaeological Museum, located in the spaces of the Major Monastery of San Maurizio, a monastic institution founded around the 8th century AD on the most impressive remains of Roman Milan.

Since 2006, over 2 million 630 thousand visitors have been welcomed until 23 February 2020 when, due to the health emergency, access was temporarily suspended.

The Church of San Maurizio is one of the most iconic and visited places in Milan, a masterpiece of Milanese art that is striking for its originality: it was in fact the church of the former Monastero Maggiore, the largest and oldest female monastery in Milan. The spectacle is given above all by the decoration: on the walls and on the ceiling there is a riot of paintings, stuccos, frescoes that cover every space, both in the Hall of the Faithful and in the Choir of the Nuns. The genius loci is Bernardino Luini, who worked there with his school, portraying stories of saints, parables and biblical episodes. An extraordinary expression of Lombard Renaissance painting, so much so that the cycle of frescoes has been defined as the "Sistine Chapel of Milan".

From 9 October the Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore will reopen every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 30 (the last access for individual visitors is at 17). Entrances will take place from the Civic Archaeological Museum of Milan (Corso Magenta 30) and will be limited (16 visitors every 00 minutes), starting from 15am with last access at 10pm. Coupons will be distributed to visitors according to the progressive order of arrival.
Groups, made up of a maximum of 15 people including the guide, will be able to access from 16.30 pm upon mandatory reservation to Aster by writing to the email address: bookingsanmaurizio@spazioaster.it.
