Milan, March 10 2021 – The Museum of musical instruments of the Castello Sforzesco participates in “Music, Makers & Machines”, the new online and interactive project by Google Arts & culture dedicated to the history of electronic music and launched today on the platform thanks to the support of YouTube.

The exhibition "Music, makers & machines" is the first complete overview of a musical movement presented by Google Arts & culture, and is the result of a collaboration between the Museum of Musical Instruments of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan and over 50 archives, museums, collections, record labels, festivals and some of the music industry's leading experts and pioneers from 15 countries.

The project, in which institutions from many European countries and Africa, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea and the USA participate, tells the story of electronic music through an engaging online exhibition on the pioneers of this music and the most legendary instruments, as well as showcasing light trends, places, artists and contemporary technological breakthroughs.

The Castello Sforzesco participates in the project by presenting the virtual exhibit RAI musical phonology study in Milan.

Born in June 1955 on the initiative of musicians Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna, the RAI Milan Musical Phonology Studio saw the first sound experiments that gave rise to electronic music in Italy. The studio remained in business until 1983.

The devices were stored at RAI until 2008 when, to make them visible to the public, it was decided to transfer them to the Museum of Musical Instruments and to reconstruct them with Gio Ponti's original arrangements, underlining their historical and musical value even more than technological.

Among the musicians who worked at the Studio, in addition to Berio and Maderna, we remember Luigi Nono, John Cage, Henri Pousseur, Niccolò Castiglioni, Luciano Chailly, Aldo Clementi, Franco Donatoni, Armando Gentilucci, Giacomo Manzoni, Giacomo Marinuzzi Jr, Angelo Paccagnini, Salvatore Sciarrino, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Camillo Togni, Roman Vlad.

With over 250 online exhibitions, the “Music, makers & machines” project hosts an extensive archive of over 15.000 photos, videos, 360° tours and 3D scans along with bespoke editorial features that delve into iconic scenes, sounds and cities.
