Sempione Course. Redevelopment project approved, experimentation with 'Strade Aperto' from September

MM's tender will be held in July for the final works which will start at the beginning of 2021. An investment of 4 million thanks to the European PON Metro funds

Milan, July 10 2020 - The Municipality has recently approved the executive project for the redevelopment of Corso Sempione and MM will publish the tender in the next few days to award the works by the end of 2020 and open the construction site at the beginning of 2021.

"The redevelopment of Corso Sempione is an intervention that the city has been asking for for some time - declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works - and has a strong impact not only on the neighborhood but on the entire city, being one of the main accesses to Milan. today the road is strongly unbalanced in favor of motor mobility but above all it has major problems with uncontrolled parking and degradation: it is not worthy of a European and sustainable Milan. But we cannot allow the artery to remain in this state for much longer and for citizens find it impossible to enjoy the green areas because they are occupied by illegal parking, so we have decided to bring forward part of the project through an intervention on the 'Open Roads' model and we will work immediately on parking, for the protection of greenery and on cycling, completing the cycle route in the central-northern direction which will connect the Arco della pace, Piazza Firenze, Cascina Merlata and the Mind district".

By the end of September, parking stalls will be designed in place of a lane of the road in each direction along the tree-lined avenue and at the same time some bollards will be temporarily installed to prevent vehicle access to the green area, protecting trees and benches to facilitate the maintenance of decoration. The speed limit will also be set at 30 km/h on the side streets, thus completing the long cycle path from the Arco della Pace, along the side streets of Corso Sempione, those of Piazza Firenze and Viale Certosa, already set at 30 km/h. in recent days, it will reach the Major Cemetery and from here, along the existing cycle path of via Gallarate, it will reach Cascina Merlata.

The Corso Sempione redevelopment project was presented to citizens in 2019 and involves the development of greenery and lanes dedicated to cycling and pedestrians, more safety at intersections, elimination of degradation and wild parking but also more regular spaces for residents. The street will go from being an urban avenue with four lanes in each direction to a tree-lined avenue with a side street in each direction, two green tree-lined parterres with a two-metre wide lane inside each reserved for bicycles and pedestrians and two lanes in each direction for vehicles, rebalancing the spaces. The free and green areas, today often used for wild parking, will be reorganized. The redevelopment will allow the regular parking spaces intended mainly for residents to be redesigned, which will increase from approximately 700 to 966 spaces. The investment is 4 million euros coming from the European Pon Metro funds.

The awarding of the works will take place in 2020, to open the construction sites at the beginning of 2021.
