Rabaiotti: “We can count on a sensitive and supportive city that works so that no one is left alone”

Milan, March 16 2020 – The Municipality of Milan is implementing a series of measures to support its most vulnerable citizens in dealing with the Coronavirus emergency.

As requested with the ordinance signed today by the mayor Giuseppe Sala, starting from the next few days and thanks also to the Dar Casa cooperative which won the tender for its management, the municipal property in via Carbonia, in the Quarto area, will be available Oggiaro, already intended for the housing emergency and which will now be used for people who need to isolate themselves to protect their own and others' health, but who do not have any accommodation available.

These are 48 one- and two-room apartments for which the Municipality, together with the Civil Protection, is preparing the latest furnishings. In this emergency phase, Spazio Open Services will manage the centre.

To avoid activating the kitchens of the apartments, to better protect the health of the guests, Milano Ristorazione will provide for the safe transport and distribution of the meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Emergency volunteer operators are also active within the building and will provide initial training to managers as well as medical/nursing healthcare facilities.

With the same objectives, the Municipality has also started an agreement with the Cooperativa Sociale La Cordata, with which it has been collaborating for some time: around forty single rooms and beds are available, distributed between various locations in the city and in the hinterland, starting from the one in via Zumbini. They may be used to accommodate healthcare personnel called to help in Milan's hospitals, but also children whose parents are hospitalized due to CoViD-19 and in any case people in particular housing difficulties.

“The values that come into play at this moment - intervenes the councilor for social and housing policies Gabriele Rabaiotti - are essential and make the difference: the difference between a blocked city and one that, in need, manages to turn on and start services not foreseen but important to mitigate people's difficulties. We do what we can, we start with via Carbonia and, if necessary, we will also make other accommodation available. But everyone's collaboration is fundamental: the availability of Dar casa and the proposal of the Consortium mark the spirit with which Milan is facing and managing this difficult moment. We can count on a sensitive and supportive city that continues to work so that no one is left alone and this is a great fortune that we must learn to share."

Furthermore, the centers for the homeless active under the Cold Plan remain open even during the day to allow those without a home to comply with the government's instructions and protect their health by not staying outdoors.

The guests of the structures that did not allow a stay in line with the safety measures were transferred to more suitable places which will remain open until April 3, the date indicated by the various decrees launched by the President of the Council of Ministers. In each of the centers the meal offered by Milano Ristorazione will be guaranteed and a sanitizing liquid produced by the Polytechnic and made available to municipal structures is being distributed.

Thanks to the collaboration with Emergency, a health unit was also organised in the centers dedicated to the homeless, in the structures of the Siproimi system and in the authorized Roma camps. The doctors of the Milanese non-profit organization will have the task of monitoring the health situation and the appearance of any symptoms among the guests, by measuring body temperature and controlling respiratory activity.
