Coronavirus. First meeting of the C40 task force chaired by Mayor Sala

Recovery strategies at the center of the online meeting with representatives of Freetown, Hong Kong, Lisbon, Medellin, Melbourne, Montreal, New Orleans, Rotterdam, Seattle and Seoul

Milan, 29 April 2020 - The activities of the "Global Mayors COVID-19 Recovery Task Force" of the C40 network began today. This afternoon the first meeting of the task force of the major cities in the world for post-Covid-19 recovery was held, led by the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala.

Established with the aim of achieving a recovery that simultaneously improves public health, reduces inequality and addresses the climate crisis, through the sharing of knowledge, expertise and experience, the task force will study ways and avenues to enable citizens the return to work, preventing climate degradation from fueling an even more serious crisis for the global economy and the lives and livelihoods of people around the world.

Today's meeting, which took place online, was attended by the first citizens and representatives of the other 10 international cities that make up the task force.

Together with Mayor Sala, the group includes the Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki Sawyerr; Hong Kong Environment Secretary KS Wong; the Mayor of Lisbon Fernando Medina; the Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb; the Mayor of Medellín Daniel Quintero Calle; Melbourne Mayor Sally Capp; the Mayor of Montreal Valérie Plante; New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell; Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan; and Seoul Mayor Won-soon Park.

"It is an honor for me to be at the head of such an important group of Mayors - declared the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala, who chairs the task force -. We are all committed to finding the best economic recovery strategy for cities after the Covid pandemic -19. None of us, however, will take a step back from the goal of creating more sustainable, more equitable and healthy cities. None of us will leave our fellow citizens behind. Today our cities face an unprecedented challenge and we are motivated to lead the way our collective experience to offer support and guidance to cities around the world. We must be ambitious and determined, but also creative. I thank my fellow Mayors for their trust and collaboration."

C19's "Global Mayors COVID-40 Recovery Task Force" will meet at regular intervals over the coming weeks and months. She will be supported by the C40 secretariat and will report to the Steering Committee.

We will invest all the resources at our disposal to start a robust global recovery, allow citizens to return to work and accelerate action fight against the climate crisis".
