Coronavirus. Over 50 thousand families will receive 850 thousand free masks through pharmacies

Agreement between the Municipality of Milan, the company Azienda Farmacie milanese SpA and Federfarma Milano to reach families registered in Milan Ristorazione

Milan, September 1 2020 – Starting from 7 September there will be around 53 thousand families to whom the Municipality of Milan will assign 850 thousand free surgical masks, through 315 pharmacies in the city. The agreement with the company Azienda Farmacie milanese SpA and Federfarma Milano provides for the distribution of community masks and other possible protection measures for citizens in relation to the Covid-19 epidemiological emergency.

There are over two million masks (partly coming from donations and partly from Civil Protection) already distributed today by the Municipality of Milan both to traders, taxi drivers, riders, newsagent, public assistance associations and third sector entities, and delivered directly to home to the Milanese families who were followed by the Food Aid Device, to those who received the shopping voucher, to those who live in the ERP properties, managed by MM and ALER, and through the general practitioners and paediatricians of free choice.

In this vein, the Council approved in June the political act to promote a distribution device spread across the territory, reliable and capable of being a reference for all Milanese citizens: thanks to the agreement with the Milanese pharmacies it will therefore be possible to assign free of charge community masks (and in the future possibly also other protective material) resulting from donations or transfers from the national and regional Civil Protection.

For the Administration, a further collaboration is thus initiated for the distribution of free masks to families which strengthens the network of already existing facilities. The use of masks is in fact also expected for the next few months, even more so with the resumption of many activities in September, first and foremost that of schools.

“We are particularly satisfied with this initiative – states Domenico Laporta, CEO of the Admenta Group which manages the Municipal Pharmacies-LloydsFarmacie of Milan – which saw the coordination of various actors and the collaboration between public/private for a common goal, that is to guarantee the health of citizens through the identification and supply of adequate protection. Once again the pharmacies prove to be active and involved in confirming their fundamental role as a healthcare provider in the area".

“A fundamental characteristic of the pharmacy network is its capillarity; I am happy that all the pharmacies in Milan have been involved in this initiative - adds Annarosa Racca President of Federfarma Lombardia - so every family can be directed to the pharmacy closest to home, following the consolidated principle in this emergency of not involving citizens in unnecessary travel but to bring assistance as close as possible to people. The pharmacies will continue to provide services and collaborate with the Municipality of Milan and with all the institutions and have amply demonstrated this during this pandemic".

The Administration has envisaged that the clusters of recipients are identified among families residing or domiciled in Milan who live in conditions of economic or social hardship, who are at greater risk of contagion (elderly) or who have family members who are resuming a life of sociability and relationships, beyond work reasons (for example, families with children who are about to return to school). The act also provides that distribution takes place as a priority through pharmacies participating in the agreement.

The first cluster identified therefore concerns approximately 170 thousand citizens: these are approximately 53 thousand families residing in the Municipality of Milan and with children enrolled in the Milan Ristorazione school meals. Each family unit is allocated 5 masks for each member over 6 years of age, for a total of approximately 850 thousand, to be collected in the pharmacies identified based on the proximity criterion.

The Municipality of Milan is informing families about the pharmacy where they can go to collect it (with tax code), indicating the days. To find the nearest pharmacy you can always use the LloydsFarmacia App (for the municipal ones in Milan) and the Open Pharmacy App (for all pharmacies in Milan and Lombardy), or the website www.farmacia-aperta.eu.
