Coronavirus. The Lambrate crematorium center is back in operation

Councilor Cocco: “I thank the workers in the funeral sector for the extraordinary work they have done”. Reopening early after temporary closure. No costs for official burials and extraordinary exhumations

Milan 20 April 2020 – The Lambrate Crematorium Center is back in operation after the temporary closure decided on 3 April due to the continuation of the health emergency and the consequent saturation of the structure.
The crematorium will reopen more than ten days earlier than the directives of ordinance 18/20 - now revoked - which ordered its closure until April 30th.
The new ordinance therefore authorizes the cremations of deceased Milanese residents starting today, while entry for non-resident deceased remains suspended.
It also introduces some innovations for officially buried bodies due to the failure of families to make arrangements within five days of the date of death, as established by ordinance no. 12/2020.

Field 87 of the Major Cemetery, already dedicated to official burials for a few weeks, will remain landscaped - without the possibility of placing monuments or artefacts - for two years from the date of the last burial.
All burial costs remain the responsibility of the municipal administration even if the family members subsequently decide to transfer their loved ones to another field, to bury them or to proceed with cremation. Family members will also be exempt from paying the municipal fee for the funeral service and for the extraordinary exhumation of the deceased buried in field 87.

“We are faced with a health emergency that has turned our lives upside down and, unfortunately, also the normal functioning of our cemeteries and cremation services, forcing us to make difficult choices - comments the councilor for civic services Roberta Cocco -. From today the Lambrate crematorium will return to being fully operational well ahead of schedule and for this I thank the entire funeral and cemetery sector for the extraordinary work done".
