Town Council. “Woman symbol against war”, Milan gives honorary citizenship to Yelena Osipova

The city assembly's recognition of the Russian artist, survivor of the Nazi siege of Leningrad, arrested for demonstrating against the invasion of Ukraine

Milan, 7 April 2022 – Yelena Osipova honorary citizen of Milan. The City Council approved the council initiative resolution for the conferral of honorary citizenship to Mrs Yelena Osipova, a Russian artist who survived the Nazi siege of Leningrad, arrested and then released for having expressed her dissent towards the war waged by Russia against 'Ukraine.
Osipova, an eighty-year-old, took to the streets in recent weeks with a sign that read: "Soldier, drop your weapon and you will be a true hero!". For this reason, like many other Russian citizens who publicly opposed the war, she was arrested, and once released she returned to protest.

For the City Council "the awarding of honorary citizenship to Yelena Osipova represents a strong signal of solidarity and closeness of the city of Milan to a woman who is a symbol of the Russian citizens who are fighting against the war in Ukraine for peace".
